The 2012 Traverse with the 3.6L V6 is a spacious three-row crossover plagued by catastrophic timing chain and transmission cooler failures that can total the vehicle if ignored. These aren't minor issues—they're platform-defining weaknesses that require vigilant maintenance and immediate attention to warning signs.
Timing Chain Stretch and Sprocket Failure Leading to Engine Destruction
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle lasting 5-15 seconds that progressively worsens, Check engine light with P0008, P0016, P0017 camshaft position correlation codes, Rough idle and loss of power as timing retards, Catastrophic failure: bent valves, piston/cylinder wall damage if chain jumps or breaks
Fix: Requires timing chain kit replacement for both banks, new guides, tensioners, and cam phasers. If caught early (just rattling), 12-16 hours labor. If internal damage occurred, you're looking at head gasket work or complete engine replacement—short block swap runs 25-35 hours. This engine requires pulling from the top with subframe support, not a quick job.
Estimated cost: $2,800-4,500 for preventive chain replacement, $8,000-12,000 for engine rebuild/replacement after failure
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Corrosion and Cross-Contamination
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Strawberry milkshake appearance in coolant overflow—classic transmission fluid mixing with coolant, Transmission slipping, delayed engagement, or harsh shifts after coolant intrusion, Engine overheating as transmission fluid blocks radiator passages, White smoke from exhaust if coolant enters transmission significantly
Fix: The cooler lines inside the radiator corrode through, allowing fluids to mix. Requires new radiator, complete transmission fluid flush (often multiple flushes), and in severe cases full transmission replacement if contamination damaged clutch packs. Caught immediately: 4-6 hours for radiator and flush. If delayed: add 12-18 hours for transmission R&R.
Estimated cost: $800-1,500 if caught early with radiator replacement and flushing, $4,000-6,500 if transmission replacement needed
Transmission Range Sensor and Shift Cable Failures
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Dash shows wrong gear or 'no gear' while transmission operates normally, Won't start because system thinks it's not in Park, Shift lever feels loose or disconnected, Intermittent P0700, P0708, P0717 transmission codes
Fix: The transmission range sensor (NSBU switch) on the valve body fails commonly, requiring pan drop and valve body removal—3-4 hours. Shift cables stretch or fray at the transmission mount bracket due to engine movement. Cable replacement adds another 2-3 hours because you're accessing tight firewall area.
Estimated cost: $450-850 for range sensor, $350-650 for shift cable
Power Steering Rack Leaks and Groaning
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Power steering fluid dripping from rack boots onto subframe, Groaning or whining when turning at low speeds, especially when cold, Steering feels notchy or catches at center position, Rapid power steering fluid consumption
Fix: The rack develops internal seal leaks that are not serviceable—full rack replacement required. On AWD models this is particularly labor-intensive because you're working around the transfer case and prop shaft. Expect 4-6 hours for FWD, 6-8 hours for AWD including alignment.
Symptoms: AC blows warm after working fine for years, Low refrigerant with no visible external leaks, Sweet smell from vents (refrigerant oil), Oily residue on passenger floor or under glove box
Fix: The evaporator core develops pinhole leaks from internal corrosion. This is a full dash removal job—one of the most labor-intensive repairs on this vehicle. You're pulling the entire instrument panel, steering column, and HVAC housing to access it. Figure 10-14 hours labor, plus refrigerant recovery and recharge.
Estimated cost: $1,800-2,800
Front Lower Control Arm Bushings and Ball Joints
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunking over bumps from front end, especially on uneven roads, Steering wander or loose feeling at highway speeds, Inner edge tire wear from camber shift, Visible cracking or separation of rubber bushings on inspection
Fix: The lower control arm bushings deteriorate and ball joints wear due to vehicle weight (5,000+ lbs loaded). Most shops replace the entire control arm assembly rather than pressing bushings. Figure 2-3 hours per side including alignment. Do both sides at once to save on alignment costs.
Estimated cost: $600-900 for both sides with alignment
Owner tips
Change engine oil every 5,000 miles maximum with quality synthetic—this is critical for timing chain longevity on the 3.6L
Inspect coolant regularly for discoloration or oily appearance; catch that transmission cooler failure before it kills the transmission
Budget $3,000-5,000 for timing chain service around 100,000 miles as preventive maintenance—it's cheaper than a new engine
Have transmission fluid changed every 50,000 miles despite GM calling it 'lifetime'—heat kills these 6T75 transmissions
Check power steering fluid monthly; catching rack leaks early prevents steering loss
Only buy if you can verify timing chains and transmission cooler have been addressed, or budget $5,000+ for imminent repairs—these engines and transmissions fail catastrophically, not gracefully.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2013 Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia and 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact air bag (SIAB) wiring harnesses may result in the SIAB and seat belt pretensioners not deploying in the event of a crash.
Consequence: Failure of the side impact air bags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy in a crash increase the risk of injury to the driver and front seat occupant.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected harness connections with soldered connections, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2014. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. GM's number for this recall is 14030.
