Symptoms: Cold-start ticking or tapping that persists after warm-up, MDS (cylinder deactivation) system throwing P3401/P3425 codes, Sudden loss of power with metallic knocking, Metal shavings in oil, dropped valves destroying pistons and cylinder walls

Fix: Early HEMI engines suffer collapsed lifter rollers that chew up cam lobes, drop valves, and score cylinder walls. Once the knock starts, it's too late—you need a complete engine rebuild or replacement. We're seeing 40-60 hours of labor for a proper rebuild including machine work, all new bearings, pistons, rings, heads, cam, lifters. Many shops just swap in a reman long block to save diagnosis time.

Symptoms: Strawberry milkshake-colored fluid in radiator or transmission, Transmission slipping, delayed engagement, or complete failure, Coolant loss with no external leaks, Engine overheating after transmission issues develop

Fix: The factory radiator has an internal trans cooler that ruptures, mixing ATF and coolant. This contaminates both systems and destroys the transmission within days if driven. Proper fix requires new radiator, external trans cooler, complete trans flush (often a rebuild since contamination damages clutches/valve body), coolant flush, all hoses. Figure 12-18 hours if the trans needs a rebuild, 6-8 if you catch it immediately.

Symptoms: Whining or howling from rear that increases with speed, Clunking when shifting from drive to reverse, Grinding noise during acceleration, Gear oil leak from pinion seal area

Fix: The rear diff pinion bearings wear prematurely, especially in 4WD models that see towing. Once the whine starts, the bearing is already eating the ring gear. Needs complete differential rebuild with new carrier bearings, pinion bearings, crush sleeve, and often ring-and-pinion if caught late. Setup requires precise shimming and torque specs. 6-9 hours labor.

Symptoms: White smoke on cold start that clears up, Coolant loss with no visible leaks, Misfires on multiple cylinders, Overheating and bubbles in coolant reservoir

Fix: The 4.7L PowerTech engines drop valve seats due to inadequate interference fit from the factory. This leads to compression loss and head gasket failure. Proper fix is both heads off, hardened seat inserts machined in, new gaskets, timing chains (while you're in there), water pump. Machine work adds cost. 18-24 hours total.

Symptoms: Clunking over bumps from front suspension, Wandering or loose steering feel, Uneven tire wear on inside edge, Visible play when prying on ball joint with wheel off ground

Fix: Ball joints wear rapidly and the press-in design allows them to pop out of the control arm socket, causing immediate loss of control. Chrysler issued TSB 02-001-07 but never recalled them. Replace both lower control arms as assemblies (ball joints aren't serviceable separately on these). Always do alignment after. 3-4 hours labor.

Symptoms: Loud ticking from engine bay that changes with RPM, Exhaust smell in cabin, Visible soot streaks on manifold, P0430/P0420 catalyst efficiency codes from leak affecting O2 sensors

Fix: Manifold bolts corrode and snap flush with the head due to heat cycles and dissimilar metals. Requires drilling out broken studs, often multiple per side. On the HEMI, the rear manifolds require removing engine mounts and jacking the engine for access. Budget 6-9 hours if multiple studs are broken and you're drilling/helicoiling in-place. New manifolds and gaskets recommended.

Symptoms: Service 4WD light illuminated on dash, Grinding or clicking from transfer case area, Unable to shift into 4WD or stuck in 4WD, Codes C121C, C2204 for transfer case shift motor

Fix: The electric shift motor on the NV245 transfer case seizes or strips internal gears. Motor itself is external and takes about 2 hours to replace. If the problem went unnoticed and the driver forced it, internal shift fork damage requires case disassembly, adding 6-8 hours.
