TPMS Relearn

This procedure relearns the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors on a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.7L Hemi after tire rotation, sensor replacement, or pressure adjustment.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Verify all four tire pressures match the specification on the driver door jamb placard (typically 35 PSI front and rear for this model year)
3. Ensure TPMS warning light is illuminated on instrument cluster (if not, sensors may already be programmed correctly)
4. Locate the TPMS sensor valve stems on all four wheels (sensors are mounted inside the tire on the valve stem)

Procedure

1. 1

   Turn ignition to ON position
   Insert key and turn ignition to the ON/RUN position without starting the engine. All warning lights on the instrument cluster should illuminate briefly. Do not start the engine during this procedure.

   Verify tire pressures
   Using a tire pressure gauge, verify all four tires are inflated to the specification listed on the driver door jamb placard. Adjust as necessary. The TPMS system will not relearn properly if tire pressures are incorrect or significantly different between tires.

   Access TPMS relearn mode
   The 2006 Ram 1500 requires a compatible scan tool (DRB III, StarSCAN, wiTECH, or equivalent) connected to the OBD-II diagnostic connector to place the TPMS module into relearn/training mode. Enter relearn mode via the scan tool before activating the sensors. Confirm successful sensor recognition through the scan tool (which displays each learned sensor ID) rather than relying on a horn chirp.    Activate left rear sensor
   Move to the left rear tire and repeat the activation process. Hold the TPMS tool near the valve stem and activate. Wait for the horn chirp or instrument cluster confirmation. After the fourth sensor is successfully learned, verify on the scan tool that all four sensor IDs have been stored and exit the relearn mode per the tool's instructions to complete the procedure.    Complete relearn procedure
   Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition back to the ON position without starting the engine. Observe the instrument cluster. The TPMS warning light should illuminate for approximately 3 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If the light remains illuminated or flashes, the relearn was not successful.

Reassembly

Verification

• Start the engine and verify the TPMS warning light is not illuminated on the instrument cluster
• Drive the vehicle for 5-10 minutes at speeds above 20 MPH to allow the system to fully initialize and verify sensor communication
• If the TPMS light remains off after the test drive, the relearn was successful
• If the TPMS light illuminates or flashes during the test drive, one or more sensors may be faulty or the relearn sequence was not completed correctly
