Armrest

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front center console armrest assembly on a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

• Trim panel clips (if damaged) × 4 — Mopar 6503218 or equivalent
• Console mounting screws (if corroded) × 4 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure center console area is clear of personal items and debris
3. Open armrest storage compartment and remove all contents
4. Allow interior to cool if vehicle was recently operated (diesel models retain heat longer)

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove armrest storage liner and inspect
   Lift out the rubber or carpet storage liner from inside the armrest compartment. Check for any loose items, coins, or debris that may have fallen behind. Use shop vacuum if needed to clean the area before proceeding.

   Remove armrest lid screws
   With the armrest lid in the open position, locate the mounting screws at the rear hinge area of the armrest. These are typically Phillips head screws accessible from inside the storage compartment. Remove all screws and set aside. Some models may use T20 Torx fasteners instead.

   Disconnect armrest from console base
   Carefully lift the armrest assembly upward and rearward to disengage it from the console base. Check for any wiring connectors if your model has power outlets or heated armrest features. If present, press the connector tab and separate the electrical connection before fully removing the armrest.

   Remove console trim panels if necessary
   If replacing the entire console assembly rather than just the armrest lid, use the flat-blade trim tool to carefully pry up the front trim panel clips. Start at the rear and work forward, releasing each clip gradually. The Ram 2500 console has 4-6 clips depending on year.
   ⚠Heat from the transmission tunnel can make these clips extremely brittle on diesel 4WD models

   Remove console mounting bolts
   Locate the console mounting bolts at the front and rear of the console base. Use 10mm socket to remove the bolts. Typical configuration is two bolts at the front near the transmission shifter area and two at the rear. Support the console as you remove the final bolts.

   Lift and remove console assembly
   Carefully lift the console assembly upward and rearward, maneuvering around the shifter if equipped with automatic transmission. The transfer case shifter on 4WD models may require slight repositioning. Inspect the floor mounting points for corrosion or damage.

   Install new armrest or console assembly
   Position the new armrest assembly or complete console into place, ensuring all mounting holes align with the floor bracket locations. On 4WD models, carefully navigate around both transmission and transfer case shifters. Verify any wiring harnesses are routed correctly and not pinched.

   Install mounting bolts to specification
   Install the console mounting bolts at front and rear locations, threading them by hand initially to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, use torque wrench to tighten to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the console base.

   Reinstall trim panels and clips
   If removed, align the trim panels with the console base and firmly press down on each clip location until you hear or feel them snap into place. Replace any damaged clips identified during removal. Ensure all panel edges are flush and properly seated.

    Connect armrest electrical if equipped
    If your armrest has power outlets, heated features, or lighting, reconnect the electrical connector ensuring it clicks fully into place. Verify the connection is secure and the wiring is not stretched or kinked.

    Install armrest lid and secure
    Position the armrest lid onto the hinge mechanism and align the mounting screw holes. Install all armrest mounting screws and tighten evenly. There is no manufacturer torque spec for these cover screws; tighten until snug by hand only. Otherwise, tighten until snug but do not overtighten as plastic threads can strip.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment
2. Test armrest lid operation through full range of motion to ensure smooth operation
3. Reinstall storage liner and check that it fits properly without interference
4. Confirm all electrical features (if equipped) function properly before closing procedure

Verification

• Open and close armrest lid multiple times to verify smooth hinge operation and proper latching
• Check that console does not move or rattle when pushed from different angles
• Test any electrical accessories (power outlets, lights) if equipped
• Verify all trim panels are secure with no loose clips or gaps
• Confirm shifters (transmission and transfer case) operate without interference from console
