Center Console

This procedure covers removal and installation of the center console assembly in a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with manual transmission.

• Shifter boot retaining clip (often breaks during removal) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. If equipped with airbag system, disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
3. Remove any items stored in console compartments
4. Set transmission to neutral position for easier shifter trim removal

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove shifter trim bezel
   Carefully pry up the shifter boot trim bezel from the front using a flat-head screwdriver or trim tool. Work around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. Once loose, lift the bezel up and over the shifter knob. Note the orientation of any clips or retainers for reinstallation.

   Remove shifter boot
   Locate the shifter boot retaining ring or clips at the base of the boot. Compress or unclip the retaining ring and slide the boot up the shifter lever. On some models, the boot may be secured with a metal clip that requires squeezing with pliers before removal.

   Remove front console screws
   Locate and remove the console mounting screws at the front of the console near the dash. These are typically Phillips or Torx screws located in recessed areas. Remove all visible screws securing the front of the console to the floor or transmission tunnel.

   Console Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)

   Remove rear console mounting hardware
   Open any storage compartments in the console and locate mounting bolts or screws at the rear. Remove the rear mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. These typically secure the console to the floor pan.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Identify any electrical connectors for power outlets, lighting, or accessory switches in the console. Depress the locking tabs and carefully disconnect all electrical connectors. Note the routing of wiring harnesses for reinstallation.

   Remove console side brackets
   If equipped, remove the bracket bolts securing the console to the transmission tunnel on each side. These brackets provide additional stability and are typically located under the armrest area.

   Lift and remove console assembly
   With all fasteners removed, carefully lift the console up and over the shifter lever. Guide the console rearward and upward, ensuring no wiring is still connected. Use caution not to damage the shifter boot or surrounding interior trim during removal.

   Install console assembly
   Position the new or serviced console over the shifter lever, threading it down carefully. Align the mounting holes with the floor pan and transmission tunnel brackets. Ensure all wiring harness routing paths are clear before fully seating the console.

   Install rear mounting bolts
   Install the rear console mounting bolts through the floor pan mounting points. Start all bolts by hand before tightening. Torque the mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench.

    Install side brackets and front hardware
    If equipped, install the side bracket bolts to secure the console to the transmission tunnel. Install and torque the bracket bolts to specification. Install the front console screws and torque to specification.
    Torque spec

    Reconnect electrical connections
    Reconnect all electrical connectors for power outlets, lighting, and switches. Ensure each connector locks fully into place with an audible click. Route wiring to avoid pinch points.

    Reinstall shifter boot and trim
    Slide the shifter boot down over the shifter lever and secure with the retaining ring or clips at the base. Position the shifter trim bezel over the shifter and press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips (no torque specification applies to snap-in trim).
    Torque spec

    Shifter Trim5 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

1. Reconnect negative battery cable if previously disconnected
2. Test all console electrical functions including power outlets and lighting
3. Verify shifter moves freely through all gear positions without interference
4. Check that all console compartments open and close properly

Verification

• Confirm console is securely mounted with no movement or rattles
• Verify all electrical functions in console operate correctly
• Check that shifter operates smoothly through all gear positions
• Ensure all trim pieces are properly seated and secure
