This procedure covers removal and replacement of the center link and drag link on the 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine, restoring proper steering linkage function.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Steering linkage components are under tension. Use proper separators to avoid sudden release and injury.
⚠Castle nuts must be tightened to proper torque and aligned for cotter pin installation. Never loosen to align; tighten up to 1/6 turn additional if needed.
ℹ️This vehicle will require a front-end alignment after completing this repair.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Raise front of vehicle with floor jack and support securely on jack stands under frame rails
  4. Remove both front wheels using 21mm socket
  5. Spray all castle nuts and tapered studs with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 15 minutes
  6. Turn steering wheel to center position and note pitman arm orientation for reference

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove cotter pins from drag link connections
Using needle nose pliers, straighten and remove the cotter pins from the castle nuts at both ends of the drag link (pitman arm to knuckle connection). The drag link runs from the pitman arm on the steering box to the passenger side steering knuckle. Discard old cotter pins.
  2. 2
    Remove drag link castle nuts
Using an 18mm socket, remove the castle nuts from both ends of the drag link. Support the drag link while removing the final nut to prevent it from falling.
  3. 3
Separate drag link from pitman arm and knuckle
Use a pickle fork or tie rod separator to break the taper connection at both ends of the drag link. Insert the tool between the stud and mounting surface, then strike firmly with a hammer. Once tapers are broken, remove the drag link from the vehicle. Clean the tapered mounting holes on both the pitman arm and steering knuckle with a wire brush.
⚠The drag link will drop suddenly when the taper breaks. Keep hands clear of pinch points.
  4. 4
Remove cotter pins from center link connections
Using needle nose pliers, straighten and remove the cotter pins from the castle nuts at both tie rod ends where they connect to the center link, and at the center link connection to the drag link mounting point on the passenger side knuckle. The center link connects both tie rod inner ends. Discard old cotter pins.
  5. 5
    Remove center link castle nuts
Using an 18mm socket, remove the castle nuts from both tie rod inner ends and the idler arm connection. Support the center link while removing the final nut.
  6. 6
Separate center link from tie rods and idler arm
Use a pickle fork or tie rod separator to break the taper connections at the tie rod inner ends and idler arm stud. Insert the tool between the stud and mounting surface, then strike firmly with a hammer. Remove the center link from the vehicle. Clean all tapered mounting holes with a wire brush.
  7. 7
    Inspect related components
With linkage removed, inspect the pitman arm and tie rod ends for excessive wear, torn boots, or damage. Check for play in the pitman arm and steering box. Replace any worn components now to avoid repeat repairs.
  8. 8
    Install new center link
Position the new center link and insert the tapered studs into the tie rod inner ends and idler arm mounting holes. Ensure all tapered surfaces are clean and dry. Thread castle nuts onto all three studs hand-tight. The center link should sit naturally in position without forcing.
  9. 9
Torque center link castle nuts and install cotter pins
Using a torque wrench and 18mm socket, tighten all three castle nuts on the center link connections to specification. Align the castle nut slots with the stud holes by tightening up to an additional 1/6 turn if needed (never loosen). Install new cotter pins through each castle nut and bend the ends to secure.
    Torque spec
    Castle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Install new drag link
Insert the drag link tapered stud into the pitman arm connection and the opposite end into the passenger side steering knuckle connection. Ensure tapered surfaces are clean and dry. Thread castle nuts onto both studs hand-tight.
  11. 11
Torque drag link castle nuts and install cotter pins
Using a torque wrench and 18mm socket, tighten both castle nuts on the drag link connections to specification. Align the castle nut slots with the stud holes by tightening up to an additional 1/6 turn if needed (never loosen). Install new cotter pins through each castle nut and bend the ends to secure.
    Torque spec
    Castle Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Verify steering linkage movement
With all connections secured, manually turn the steering knuckles through their full range of motion to verify smooth operation with no binding. Check that all cotter pins are properly installed and bent. Verify no components contact the frame or other parts during movement.
  13. 13
    Reinstall wheels
Install both front wheels and thread lug nuts by hand. Lower vehicle partially so wheels contact the ground but vehicle weight is still on jack stands. Torque lug nuts in a star pattern to specification. Remove jack stands and lower vehicle completely.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts183 Nm (135 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all castle nuts are properly torqued and secured with new cotter pins
  2. Verify steering wheel is centered with wheels pointing straight ahead
  3. Check for adequate steering linkage clearance during full lock-to-lock rotation

Verification

  • Start engine and turn steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
  • With engine running, verify no steering play or looseness at idle
  • Inspect all connections visually to confirm cotter pins are installed and properly bent
  • Test drive vehicle at low speed in a safe area to verify proper steering response
  • Schedule a professional front-end alignment as soon as possible after completing this repair
