Dimmer Switch

Replace the headlight dimmer switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column to restore proper headlight high/low beam and turn signal operation.

• Multifunction switch (dimmer/turn signal switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification or quality aftermarket
• Electrical connector grease × 1 — Dielectric grease

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect battery negative terminal
4. Wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
5. Position steering wheel straight ahead before beginning disassembly
6. Gather all tools and new dimmer switch

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower steering column cover
   Locate the two screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover below the instrument cluster. Remove the Phillips head screws and pull the lower cover downward and away from the column. Set aside.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   With the lower cover removed, locate the screws securing the upper steering column cover. Remove the screws and carefully lift the upper cover upward and off the steering column. Take care not to snag any wiring. The tilt lever may need to be in a specific position to clear the cover.

   Access multifunction switch
   With both covers removed, locate the multifunction switch on the left side of the steering column. The switch assembly contains the turn signal lever and dimmer switch controls. Note the routing of the wiring harness before removal.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the large electrical connector for the multifunction switch. Depress the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the switch. If connector is difficult to remove, gently rock it side to side while pulling. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.
   ⚠Do not pull on wires; pull only on the connector body to avoid damaging terminals

   Remove multifunction switch mounting screws
   Locate the switch mounting screws securing the multifunction switch to the steering column (typically two screws). Verify the exact fastener type and size against the service manual before removal. Remove both screws completely and retain them if reusing. The switch is now free from the column.

   Remove old multifunction switch
   Carefully pull the multifunction switch assembly away from the steering column. The turn signal lever should pull out with the assembly. Note the position and orientation of any spacers or alignment features for installation of the new switch.

   Prepare new multifunction switch
   Unpack the new multifunction switch and verify it matches the old unit. Check that the turn signal lever is properly attached. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector pins on the new switch to prevent corrosion.

   Install new multifunction switch
   Position the new multifunction switch onto the steering column, ensuring proper alignment with the mounting holes. The lever should be on the left side of the column. Verify any alignment pins or tabs are properly seated before installing screws.

   Install mounting screws
   Thread both mounting screws into the multifunction switch mounting holes. Tighten the screws evenly and alternately to the specified torque for Switch Mounting Screws to ensure proper seating of the switch.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Align the electrical connector with the pins on the new multifunction switch. Push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.

    Reinstall upper steering column cover
    Position the upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring all wiring is routed properly and not pinched. Align the cover screw holes and install screws, tightening to specification.

    Reinstall lower steering column cover
    Position the lower steering column cover and align the mounting holes with the upper cover. Install the Phillips screws and tighten to specification. Ensure cover is seated flush with no gaps.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the battery negative terminal and tighten to specification. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Test all multifunction switch operations including high beams, low beams, turn signals (left and right), hazard lights, and any other integrated functions.
    ℹ️Verify turn signals cancel properly after turning and that high beam indicator light functions correctly

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
2. Verify no wiring is pinched between column covers
3. Check that turn signal lever moves freely through full range of motion
4. Confirm all screws are tightened to proper torque specifications

Verification

• With ignition ON, pull turn signal lever toward you to verify high beams activate and blue indicator illuminates on dash
• Push turn signal lever forward to verify low beams activate
• Test left and right turn signals for proper flash rate and automatic cancellation after turning
• Test hazard light function if integrated into multifunction switch
• Verify flash-to-pass function works by pulling lever partway toward you
• Start engine and verify all lighting functions work under electrical load
• Take vehicle for short test drive to confirm turn signal cancellation works properly after turns
