Door Panel

This procedure covers the removal and installation of the interior door panel on a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 to access window regulators, door locks, or speakers.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Roll window completely up before beginning door panel removal
3. If equipped with power accessories, disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes
4. Gather replacement clips and trim panel fasteners as originals often break during removal

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door handle trim cover
   Locate the small screw cover on the interior door handle. Use a trim tool or small flat blade screwdriver to carefully pry off the cover. Remove the Phillips head screw behind the cover securing the door handle bezel.

   Remove armrest screws
   Locate two screws at the bottom of the armrest/door pull area. These are typically Phillips or Torx head screws. Remove both screws and set aside. On some models, there may be a third screw hidden under a small plastic cap in the armrest pocket. Snug door panel screws hand-tight; these are light trim fasteners and no torque specification applies.

   Remove mirror trim cover
   If equipped with power mirrors, carefully pry off the triangular mirror trim cover at the front upper corner of the door using a trim panel tool. Disconnect the power mirror electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight out. For manual mirrors, the mirror is adjusted directly at the mirror head; no interior knob removal is required.

   Remove door panel screw at mirror location
   Behind the mirror trim piece, locate and remove the screw securing the upper portion of the door panel. This is typically a Phillips or Torx screw.

   Disconnect window crank or power window switch
   For manual windows, use a shop towel behind the window crank handle to catch the retaining clip, then work the clip out and remove the crank handle. For power windows, carefully pry up the power window switch bezel with a trim tool and disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the tab.

   Release door panel retaining clips
   Starting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, insert a trim panel removal tool between the door panel and the metal door frame. Work your way around the perimeter, gently prying outward to release the plastic retaining clips. There are typically 8 clips around the door panel perimeter. Listen for popping sounds as each clip releases.

   Lift door panel up and away
   Once all clips are released, lift the entire door panel straight up approximately 1-2 inches to clear the door latch mechanism and window sill. Pull the panel away from the door frame.

   Disconnect remaining electrical connectors
   With the panel partially removed, reach behind and disconnect any remaining electrical connectors for door locks, courtesy lights, or speakers. Press the connector release tabs and pull straight apart. Note the routing of wiring harnesses for reinstallation.

   Remove moisture barrier if needed
   If accessing window regulator or door lock mechanisms, carefully peel back the plastic moisture barrier. Work slowly to avoid tearing the barrier, as it must be resealed to prevent water intrusion. On older vehicles, the adhesive may be degraded.

    Install new or replacement clips
    Before reinstalling the door panel, inspect all retaining clips on both the panel and door frame. Replace any broken or damaged clips by pressing new clips firmly into the door panel mounting holes until they snap into place. Ensure clips are fully seated.

    Reinstall door panel
    Reconnect all electrical connectors for switches, locks, and speakers. Align the door panel with the window sill and door frame, then lower it into position, engaging the top lip over the window opening. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. You should hear distinct clicks as each clip engages.

    Reinstall fasteners and trim pieces
    Reinstall all screws removed during disassembly. Install the upper screw near the mirror location first, then the armrest screws. Snug door panel screws hand-tight; do not overtighten as they thread into plastic/sheet metal. Reinstall the door handle trim cover, mirror trim piece, and window crank or power window switch assembly.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before final panel installation
2. If moisture barrier was disturbed, reseal it completely with new butyl tape or weatherstrip adhesive to prevent water leaks
3. Test all door functions (windows, locks, mirrors) before considering the job complete
4. Reconnect battery negative terminal if it was disconnected

Verification

• Verify all door panel screws are tight and torqued to specification
• Confirm all retaining clips are fully engaged by checking for gaps between panel and door frame
• Test power window operation through full up and down travel
• Test door lock operation from both interior and exterior
• Test power mirror adjustment in all directions if equipped
• Check for any rattles or loose panels by gently pushing on door panel at various points
• Verify courtesy lights and speakers function properly
