Complete replacement of all engine mounts on the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine, including both motor mounts and transmission mount to eliminate excessive engine movement and vibration.
Warnings
⚠️The 5.9L Cummins diesel engine weighs approximately 1,150 lbs. Ensure engine support equipment is rated appropriately and properly installed before removing any mounts.
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Use properly rated jack stands on solid ground.
⚠Apply penetrating oil to all mount fasteners 24 hours before beginning work if possible, as corrosion is common on these vehicles.
⚠The engine will shift position when mounts are removed. Mark hood and body panel clearances before beginning to ensure proper alignment during installation.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect both negative and positive battery cables to prevent electrical shorts during engine movement
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Remove engine skid plate if equipped (4WD models)
- Apply penetrating oil to all visible mount bolts and allow to soak
- Install engine support fixture across inner fenders or use overhead hoist with load leveler attached to engine lifting eyes
- Take weight off mounts by slightly raising engine (approximately 1/8 inch) to relieve tension
Procedure
- 1Remove driver side (left) engine mountFrom underneath vehicle, locate the left engine mount between engine block and frame rail. Remove the mount-to-frame bolts first while engine weight is supported by fixture. Then remove the engine mount-to-block bolts. Note the orientation of mount and any shims or spacers for reinstallation. Remove mount assembly from vehicle.
- 2Remove passenger side (right) engine mountLocate the right engine mount between engine block and frame rail. Access may be restricted by air conditioning lines and power steering components - work carefully to avoid damage. Remove mount-to-frame bolts, then remove engine mount-to-block bolts. Carefully extract mount assembly, noting orientation and position of any shims.
- 3Remove transmission mount and crossmemberPosition jack under transmission pan with wood block for protection. Raise jack to just contact transmission and take slight weight. Remove the transmission mount bolts securing mount to transmission. Remove mount-to-frame bolts or crossmember mounting bolts. Lower transmission slightly on jack and remove mount assembly. On some models, entire crossmember must be removed.
- 4Inspect mounting locations and clean surfacesWith all mounts removed, inspect engine block mounting surfaces, frame rail mounting locations, and transmission mounting points for cracks, damage, or elongated bolt holes. Use wire brush to clean all mounting surfaces and bolt holes. Remove rust, corrosion, and old thread locking compound. Inspect for frame damage or cracks especially around mount attachment points.
- 5Install new left engine mountPosition new left engine mount between engine block and frame rail, ensuring proper orientation matches original. Do not apply anti-seize to these structural mount bolts unless specified; if the OEM procedure calls for thread locker, apply the specified thread-locking compound to the bolt threads. Start all engine mount-to-block bolts finger tight first. Then start mount-to-frame bolts finger tight. Use engine support to adjust engine position for proper alignment if needed. Torque engine mount-to-block bolts to specification first, then torque mount-to-frame bolts.Torque specEngine Mount-to-Block Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)Engine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
- 6Install new right engine mountPosition new right engine mount between engine block and frame rail. Do not apply anti-seize to these structural mount bolts unless specified; if the OEM procedure calls for thread locker, apply the specified thread-locking compound to the bolt threads. Start engine mount-to-block bolts finger tight, ensuring mount is properly seated against engine block. Start mount-to-frame bolts finger tight. Adjust engine position if needed for alignment. Torque engine mount-to-block bolts to specification, then torque mount-to-frame bolts to specification.Torque specEngine Mount-to-Block Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)Engine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
- 7Install transmission mount and crossmemberRaise transmission on jack to approximate installed height. If crossmember was removed, install crossmember to frame rails first. Position new transmission mount on crossmember or frame mounting points. Do not apply anti-seize to these structural mount bolts unless specified; if the OEM procedure calls for thread locker, apply the specified thread-locking compound to the bolt threads. Start all transmission mount bolts finger tight. Adjust transmission height and angle to align mount properly. Torque transmission mount bolts to specification. If applicable, torque mount-to-frame bolts.⚠Ensure transmission is level and aligned properly before final torquing. Misalignment can cause premature mount failure and driveline vibration.Torque specTransmission Mount Bolts65 Nm (48 lb-ft)Engine Mount-to-Frame Bolts75 Nm (55 lb-ft)
- 8Adjust final engine position and verify clearancesWith all mounts installed and torqued, carefully adjust engine support to allow engine to settle onto new mounts naturally. Check clearances at hood, fan shroud, radiator, and exhaust components. Verify engine sits level and centered in engine bay. Compare position to marks made during preparation. Make minor adjustments if needed by slightly loosening one mount and repositioning.
- 9Remove engine support and verify mount engagementSlowly and carefully lower engine support fixture or hoist, allowing full engine weight to transfer to new mounts. Remove engine support equipment completely. Visually inspect all mount points to ensure full engagement and proper alignment. Check that no gaps exist between mount and mounting surfaces. Verify all fasteners are still tight.
- 10Reinstall underbody components and lower vehicleReinstall engine skid plate if equipped, ensuring proper clearance to oil pan and front differential. Remove jack from under transmission. Lower vehicle from jack stands. Reconnect battery cables (positive cables first, then negative/ground cables last). Start engine and observe for unusual movement, vibration, or contact with body components.
Reassembly
- Double-check all mount bolts are torqued to specification before releasing engine weight
- Ensure no wiring, hoses, or cables have been pinched or stretched during mount replacement
- Verify fan-to-shroud clearance is adequate throughout fan rotation
- Check that exhaust components have proper clearance and are not contacting frame or body
Verification
- Start engine and let idle - there should be minimal engine movement and no contact with hood or body
- With engine running, have assistant shift transmission through all gears while observing engine movement - excessive rocking indicates improper installation
- Rev engine moderately and release throttle - engine should return smoothly without harsh rocking or banging
- Test drive vehicle and verify no vibration at idle, smooth acceleration without drivetrain shudder, and no abnormal noises from engine bay
- Re-check all mount bolt torque after 50-100 miles of driving
