Headlight Switch

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the headlight switch assembly on the 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

• Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Mopar 56009285 or equivalent

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Turn off all lights and accessories
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor to discharge
4. Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been in direct sunlight to prevent trim damage

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower dash trim panel
   Use a flat blade trim tool to carefully release the lower dash panel below the steering column. Start at the bottom edge and work around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. Pull the panel away gently to avoid breaking clips. There are typically 6-8 clips holding this panel.

   Remove upper knee bolster panel
   Locate and remove the Phillips screws securing the knee bolster panel (the panel directly above the pedals and below the steering column). There are typically 4 screws. Pull the panel down and away from the dash assembly, disconnecting any hood release cable if present.

   Access headlight switch mounting
   Use a flashlight to locate the headlight switch assembly on the left side of the instrument cluster bezel. Note that on many of these trucks the switch is retained by a bezel/knob and retaining nut accessed from the front, or by mounting screws behind the panel — confirm your specific configuration before proceeding. You may need to remove the instrument cluster bezel trim by releasing clips around the perimeter with a trim tool.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Reach behind the dash panel and locate the electrical connector on the back of the headlight switch. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect it from the switch. Note the connector orientation for reassembly.

   Remove switch mounting screws
   Remove the switch retaining hardware securing the headlight switch to the instrument panel (this may be Phillips screws, a retaining nut, or a snap-in collar depending on year — verify your configuration). These screws are accessed from behind the dash. Support the switch as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.
   Torque spec

   Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)

   Remove headlight switch
   Pull the headlight switch assembly straight back through the dash opening. The switch shaft and knob will pull through the bezel opening. Remove the switch from the vehicle.

   Install new headlight switch
   Insert the new headlight switch assembly through the dash panel opening from behind, ensuring the shaft and knob align properly with the bezel opening. Push the switch into position until it seats flush against the mounting surface.

   Install mounting screws
   Reinstall the switch retaining hardware (screws, nut, or collar as applicable) and snug securely by hand. Do not overtighten as this can crack the switch housing or strip the threads in the plastic dash panel.    Reconnect electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector onto the back of the headlight switch until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.

    Reinstall dash panels
    Reinstall the instrument cluster bezel trim if removed, ensuring all clips are properly seated. Reinstall the knee bolster panel and secure with Phillips screws. Reinstall the lower dash panel, pressing firmly on each clip location until all clips snap into place. Reconnect any hood release cable.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal and tighten the terminal bolt to specification.
    Torque spec

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

1. Ensure all dash panel clips are fully seated and panels are flush with surrounding trim
2. Verify headlight switch knob rotates smoothly and returns to off position
3. Check that all dashboard panels are secure with no rattles or gaps

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine)
• Test headlight switch through all positions: off, parking lights, and headlights
• Verify instrument panel dimmer function works by rotating the switch knob
• Test headlight flash-to-pass function if equipped
• Verify dome light override function works if equipped on this switch
• Check for proper instrument panel illumination at all dimmer settings
• Ensure no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster related to lighting circuits
