🔍Draft — verification in progress. This procedure was built from OLP's spec database on August 20, 2026 and is queued for line-by-line review by Chris Hackleman — master technicians with 20+ years each. That review typically completes within 3 days of generation, and this banner changes to a verified badge the moment it does. Until then, cross-check every torque value and fluid capacity against the factory manual, and stop if anything looks unsafe. If something looks off, report it below — a real person reads every report.

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front lower control arm on a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine and 4WD.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use properly rated jack stands on solid, level ground.
The front suspension is under load. Use caution when separating ball joints and suspension components.
Control arm bolts must be torqued with vehicle weight on wheels. Failure to do so will result in premature bushing failure.
ℹ️This procedure will affect wheel alignment. Professional alignment is recommended after completion.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Loosen front wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground
  4. Apply penetrating oil to control arm bolts and ball joint nut if corrosion is present
  5. Raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands at frame rails

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove wheel and tire
Remove the loosened lug nuts and take off the wheel and tire assembly. Set aside in a safe location.
  2. 2
    Support lower control arm
Position a floor jack under the lower control arm near the ball joint to support the weight of the suspension. Raise slightly to take pressure off the ball joint.
The jack must remain in place throughout the procedure to control the suspension as components are disconnected.
  3. 3
    Disconnect sway bar link
Locate the sway bar link connection to the lower control arm. Remove the nut securing the sway bar link to the control arm. You may need to hold the stud with an Allen key to prevent spinning.
    Torque spec
    Sway Bar Link61 Nm (45 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Remove ball joint cotter pin and nut
Straighten and remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint castle nut using a punch. Remove the castle nut from the ball joint stud. Keep the nut for comparison if reusing.
  5. 5
    Separate ball joint from knuckle
Using a ball joint separator tool (pickle fork or puller), separate the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. Strike the tool sharply with a hammer if using a pickle fork. Carefully lower the jack slightly to allow the control arm to drop away from the knuckle.
Wear eye protection when striking separator tools. The ball joint will separate suddenly.
  6. 6
    Remove front control arm bolt
Locate the front control arm mounting bolt at the frame bracket. Remove the nut and bolt. Note the orientation of any washers or bushings for reinstallation.
  7. 7
    Remove rear control arm bolt
Remove the rear control arm mounting bolt at the frame bracket. Note the orientation of any washers or bushings. The control arm should now be free to remove.
  8. 8
    Remove lower control arm
Maneuver the lower control arm out of the mounting brackets and away from the vehicle. Inspect the frame mounting points for damage or excessive corrosion. Clean mounting bolt holes with a wire brush.
  9. 9
    Install new lower control arm
Position the new lower control arm into the frame brackets. Insert the front and rear mounting bolts with washers in their original orientation. Thread nuts onto bolts but do NOT tighten at this time.
ℹ️Control arm bolts must remain loose until vehicle weight is on the wheels to prevent bushing bind.
  10. 10
    Connect ball joint to knuckle
Raise the floor jack to lift the control arm and align the ball joint stud with the hole in the steering knuckle. Insert the stud through the knuckle and thread on the castle nut. Tighten the nut to specification.
    Torque spec
    Ball Joint Nut88 Nm (65 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Install new cotter pin
Install a new cotter pin through the castle nut and ball joint stud. If the holes don't align, tighten the nut slightly (never loosen) until the next hole aligns. Bend cotter pin ends to secure.
  12. 12
    Reconnect sway bar link
Attach the sway bar link to the lower control arm and install the nut. Torque to specification while holding the stud with an Allen key if necessary.
    Torque spec
    Sway Bar Link61 Nm (45 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Install wheel and lower vehicle
Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly. Thread on lug nuts by hand. Lower the vehicle until the tire just contacts the ground but most weight is still on jack stands. Torque lug nuts in a star pattern to specification.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts183 Nm (135 lb-ft)
  14. 14
Torque control arm bolts with weight on wheels
Lower the vehicle completely so full weight is on the wheels. Bounce the front suspension several times to settle components. Torque both control arm mounting bolts (front and rear) to specification in this loaded position.
This step is critical. Torquing control arm bolts with suspension unloaded will cause premature bushing failure.
    Torque spec
    Control Arm Bolts165 Nm (122 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all fasteners are torqued to specification
  2. Verify cotter pin is properly installed and secured
  3. Remove jack stands and lower vehicle completely
  4. Test drive vehicle at low speed to verify no unusual noises or handling issues

Verification

  • Verify all bolts are torqued correctly, especially control arm bolts with weight on wheels
  • Confirm new cotter pin is installed and properly bent
  • Check that sway bar link moves freely without binding
  • Schedule wheel alignment as camber and caster settings will have changed
  • Road test vehicle and verify normal steering and suspension operation
