This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on the 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Warnings

The MAF sensor element is extremely fragile. Never touch the sensing element or use compressed air to clean it.
ℹ️This generation Cummins may have an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor integrated with the MAF housing or separately mounted.
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require idle relearn after reconnection.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent fault codes during sensor removal
  4. Allow engine to cool if recently operated to avoid burns from intake components
  5. Locate the MAF sensor in the air intake tube between the air filter housing and turbocharger inlet

Procedure

  1. 1
    Loosen air intake tube clamps
Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the air intake tube clamps on both sides of the MAF sensor housing. The 5.9L Cummins does not use a MAF sensor. The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is mounted in the intake tube or intake manifold/air horn between the air filter and turbocharger inlet. Loosen but do not fully remove the clamps.
  2. 2
    Disconnect MAF sensor electrical connector
Press the tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull the connector away from the MAF sensor. The connector has a weatherproof seal that may be tight. Wiggle gently while pulling if necessary.
  3. 3
    Remove MAF sensor mounting screws
Remove the fastener(s) or unthread the IAT sensor as applicable. Verify the exact fastener type and count against the factory service manual for your specific model year before proceeding. Note the orientation and position of the sensor for reinstallation. On some models, the sensor may be part of the intake tube assembly.
  4. 4
Remove MAF sensor from intake tube
Carefully pull the MAF sensor straight out of the intake tube. Be extremely careful not to touch or damage the sensing element inside. Inspect the O-ring or seal on the sensor body for damage or deterioration.
Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the intake tube. Cover the opening with a clean shop towel if leaving exposed.
  5. 5
Inspect intake tube and sealing surfaces
Inspect the intake tube bore where the MAF sensor mounts for cracks, damage, or dirt accumulation. Wipe clean with a dry shop towel. Check for any loose debris that could be drawn into the turbocharger.
  6. 6
    Install new MAF sensor
Install the new or cleaned MAF sensor into the intake tube, ensuring proper alignment with the mounting holes. If equipped with an O-ring seal, ensure it is properly seated in its groove. The sensor typically has a specific orientation with an arrow indicating airflow direction toward the engine.
  7. 7
Install and torque MAF sensor screws
Install the sensor and tighten the fastener(s) hand-snug or to the factory-specified torque. Verify the exact torque value against the service manual for your specific model year. Start all screws by hand before tightening to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten in a cross pattern if multiple screws are used.

  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the MAF sensor until you hear or feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  9. 9
    Tighten intake tube clamps
Tighten the air intake tube clamps on both sides of the MAF sensor housing to specification. Ensure the intake tube is properly seated in the rubber boots or connections before tightening.

  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the negative battery cable. On OBD2-equipped models (1996 and later), use a scan tool to clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes related to the IAT sensor. Pre-1996 models use a key-cycle method to read/clear codes. If no scan tool is available, codes will typically clear after several successful drive cycles.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all intake tube clamps are tightened to prevent vacuum leaks
  2. Ensure MAF sensor electrical connector is fully seated and locked
  3. Double-check that no tools or shop towels were left in the engine compartment

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it idles smoothly without any intake air leaks or whistling sounds
  • Check that the check engine light does not illuminate related to MAF sensor codes (P0100-P0104)
  • Test drive the vehicle and verify normal acceleration and throttle response
  • Monitor for black smoke from exhaust which could indicate improper air metering
  • Use a scan tool to verify MAF sensor is providing reasonable airflow readings (typically 15-25 g/s at idle when warm)
