Side Mirror Assembly

This procedure covers removal and installation of the side mirror assembly on a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with power mirrors, including electrical connection and proper alignment.

• Door trim panel clips (if broken) × 3 — Replace as needed

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal to prevent electrical system damage
3. Lower driver or passenger window fully to access interior door panel fasteners
4. Gather all tools and new mirror assembly before starting

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door panel trim piece
   Carefully remove the small triangular trim cover at the front upper corner of the door panel near the mirror base. On 2nd-gen (1994-2002) trucks this cover may snap off; on 3rd-gen (2003-2007) trucks it typically pulls straight off. This piece covers the mirror mounting fasteners. Work slowly to avoid breaking the retaining clips.

   Disconnect mirror electrical connector
   For power mirrors, locate the electrical connector behind the trim piece. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. If connector is corroded or tight, spray with electrical contact cleaner and work gently to avoid breaking the locking tab. Mark connector orientation if needed for reassembly.

   Remove mirror mounting bolts
   Locate the three 10mm mounting nuts (on studs) securing the mirror base to the door. These are typically arranged in a triangular pattern. Support the mirror assembly from outside the vehicle with one hand while removing the nuts with the other. Remove all three nuts completely and set aside.

   Remove mirror assembly
   With mounting bolts removed, carefully pull the mirror assembly away from the door. Guide the mirror base and any remaining wiring through the mounting hole. Be careful not to scratch the door paint during removal. Inspect the door mounting surface for damage or corrosion.

   Prepare new mirror assembly
   Unpack new mirror assembly and verify all mounting holes align with door. If mirror includes a gasket or seal, ensure it is properly positioned on the mirror base. For power mirrors, apply small amount of dielectric grease to connector terminals to prevent corrosion. Test fit the mirror to door before proceeding.

   Install new mirror assembly
   Feed electrical connector (if equipped) through the mounting hole in the door first. Position mirror assembly against door frame, aligning all three mounting holes. Start all three mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement before tightening any bolt fully.

   Torque mirror mounting bolts
   Using a torque wrench, tighten the three mirror mounting nuts to approximately 8 Nm (6 lb-ft) in a cross pattern (tighten in alternating sequence, not sequentially around the triangle). Do not overtighten, as excessive torque can crack the mirror base. Verify mirror sits flush against door with no gaps.

   Connect mirror electrical connector
   For power mirrors, reconnect electrical connector by aligning connector and pushing firmly until locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on connector to verify it is fully seated. Ensure no wiring is pinched between mirror base and door.

   Reinstall trim piece
   Align triangular trim piece over mirror base and mounting area. Press firmly around all edges until retaining clips snap into place. Verify trim piece is flush with door panel and all clips are fully engaged.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the battery negative terminal and tighten the clamp bolt to approximately 8 Nm (6 lb-ft). For power mirrors, test all mirror adjustment functions (up, down, left, right) using interior controls. For heated mirrors, test heating element after running vehicle for 2-3 minutes. Verify mirror holds position and does not vibrate excessively.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all mirror mounting bolts are torqued to specification and mirror assembly is secure with no movement
2. Verify electrical connector is fully seated and locked for power mirror operation
3. Check that trim piece is properly clipped in place with no gaps or loose edges

Verification

• Visually inspect mirror for proper alignment with door and vehicle body lines
• Test power mirror adjustment in all directions and verify smooth operation without binding
• For heated mirrors, verify heating element activates with rear defrost switch
• Perform test drive at low speed to check for excessive mirror vibration or movement
• Verify mirror provides adequate rearward visibility and is positioned correctly for driver
