Radio/Head Unit

Remove and replace the factory radio/head unit in a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine, including electrical disconnection and dash trim removal.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake

Work your way around the perimeter, releasing the retaining clips. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel forward carefully. On vehicles with auto climate control, disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the climate control panel before fully removing the bezel.

   Remove radio mounting screws
   With the bezel removed, locate the screws securing the factory radio to the dash mounting bracket (typically four screws, two on each side; verify count and driver size for your specific model year, as 1994-2001 and 2002-2007 dashes differ). Remove all screws and retain them if reusing factory mounting brackets. Remove all four screws and retain them if reusing factory mounting brackets. Note the position of any ground straps or brackets attached to the radio mounting points.

   Pull radio from dash opening
   Carefully slide the factory radio forward out of the dash cavity approximately 4-6 inches until you can access the rear connectors. Support the radio weight with one hand to prevent strain on the wiring harnesses.

   Disconnect radio electrical connections
   Disconnect the main radio wiring harness by pressing the locking tab and pulling the connector straight back. Disconnect the antenna cable by pulling straight back on the antenna connector (not the cable). If equipped, disconnect any additional connectors for amplified systems, satellite radio, or hands-free modules. Label connections if installing aftermarket unit.

   Remove factory radio
   Once all connections are disconnected, completely remove the factory radio from the vehicle. Set aside in a safe location.

   Prepare aftermarket radio wiring
   If installing an aftermarket radio, connect the wiring harness adapter to the factory radio connector. On the aftermarket adapter's output side, match wire colors according to the adapter instructions (typically: yellow = constant 12V, red = ignition 12V, black = ground, orange = illumination, blue = power antenna/amplifier turn-on). Do NOT assume the factory Chrysler connector follows these colors — verify factory wire functions against the adapter documentation, as Chrysler harness colors differ. Solder and heat-shrink or use quality crimp connectors for all wiring connections. Connect the antenna adapter if the new radio uses a different antenna connector style.
   ⚠Verify constant 12V (yellow) and switched 12V (red) wires are correctly identified to prevent battery drain or radio memory loss.

   Install dash kit to new radio
   Attach the aftermarket dash mounting kit to the new radio using the screws provided with the kit. Most Ram applications use a single-DIN kit with storage pocket or a double-DIN kit depending on radio size. Ensure the mounting brackets are secure and aligned properly before proceeding.

   Connect wiring to new radio
   Connect the wiring harness adapter to the back of the new radio. Connect the antenna cable to the new radio's antenna input. If applicable, connect any additional connections for steering wheel controls, USB extensions, or microphone modules. Ensure all connections are fully seated.

    Test radio function before final installation
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily and turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position. Test all radio functions including power, speaker output from all channels, AM/FM reception, and any additional features. Verify no error messages appear. If everything functions correctly, turn off ignition and disconnect battery negative terminal again for final installation.

    Install radio into dash
    Carefully feed the wiring and antenna connections back into the dash cavity while guiding the new radio assembly into the opening. Ensure no wires are pinched or strained. Slide the radio assembly fully into position, aligning the mounting brackets with the factory mounting holes.

    Secure radio mounting screws
    Install the mounting screws through the dash kit brackets into the factory mounting points. Tighten screws evenly and snugly by hand until secure; do not over-torque, as the dash kit brackets are plastic and there is no factory torque specification for radio mounting screws. Verify the radio is secured firmly and sits flush with the dash opening.

    Reinstall center bezel trim
    If applicable, reconnect any electrical connectors to the climate control panel. Align the center bezel with the dash opening and press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Work from one side to the other, ensuring all clips are fully seated. Verify the bezel is flush and secure around all edges.

    Reconnect battery and finalize

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels are properly seated with no gaps or misalignment
2. Ensure radio face is flush with dash trim and operates smoothly

• Turn ignition to ACC position and verify radio powers on correctly
• Test all speaker outputs by adjusting balance and fader controls
• Verify AM and FM radio reception with clear audio quality
• Test all radio functions including volume, tuning, source selection, and any auxiliary inputs
• Confirm steering wheel audio controls function properly if equipped
• Check that radio illumination dims properly with dash dimmer control
