Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Chock rear wheels securely
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental starting
  4. Allow engine and transmission to cool if recently operated
  5. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  6. Remove driver's side front wheel for better access to cable routing

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove steering column covers
Remove the lower and upper steering column covers by removing the cover screws. Carefully pull covers apart and set aside. This exposes the shift cable connection at the column shifter mechanism.
  2. 2
    Disconnect cable at column shifter
Locate the shift cable end attached to the column shift lever. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cable retaining clip from the shifter arm. Slide the cable end off the shifter pin. Note the orientation of any washers or bushings for reassembly.
  3. 3
    Remove cable bracket from column
Remove the cable bracket bolts securing the cable housing to the steering column bracket. There are typically two bolts holding the cable bracket. Keep hardware organized for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Access cable routing through firewall
Working from inside the cab, trace the cable routing toward the firewall. Remove any clips or retainers securing the cable to the dash structure. Locate where the cable passes through the firewall grommet. You may need to push the cable toward the engine bay to create slack for removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect cable at transmission
Working underneath the vehicle, locate the shift cable connection at the transmission shift lever on the driver's side of the 46RE, 47RE, or 48RE automatic transmission. Remove the retaining clip from the cable end and slide the cable off the transmission shift lever ball stud. Note the cable routing and any support clips along the way.
Be aware of hot exhaust components near the transmission shift lever
  6. 6
    Remove cable bracket at transmission
Remove the cable bracket bolts securing the cable housing to the transmission case. The bracket prevents the cable housing from moving during shifting. Keep all hardware for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove cable from vehicle
Working from underneath, push the cable and grommet through the firewall opening into the cab. Have an assistant inside pull the cable through if available. Carefully route the cable out from underneath the vehicle, noting all mounting points and clips. Inspect the firewall grommet for damage and replace if cracked or torn.
  8. 8
    Install new cable through firewall
Route the new shift cable from inside the cab through the firewall grommet. Ensure the grommet seats properly in the firewall opening to prevent water and noise intrusion. Working from underneath, pull the cable through until sufficient length is available at both the column and transmission ends.
  9. 9
    Connect cable at transmission
Attach the cable bracket to the transmission case and install the cable bracket bolts. Torque to specification. Snap the cable end onto the transmission shift lever ball stud and install the retaining clip. Ensure the connection is secure and the clip is fully seated.

  10. 10
    Secure cable routing
Install all cable routing clips and supports along the frame and body to secure the cable in the original routing path. Ensure the cable does not contact exhaust components, sharp edges, or moving parts. Allow adequate slack for movement but prevent excessive looseness.
  11. 11
    Connect cable at column shifter
Working inside the cab, attach the cable bracket to the steering column and install the cable bracket bolts. Torque to specification. Connect the cable end to the column shift lever pin using the original bushings and washers. Install the retaining clip to secure the cable end.

    Cable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Adjust cable at transmission
Place the column shifter in the PARK position. At the transmission, loosen the adjustment nut at the cable bracket. Move the transmission shift lever fully rearward to the PARK position (count the detents to confirm). With both shifter and transmission in PARK, tighten the adjustment nut to specification while holding the cable housing stationary.
Cable must be adjusted with both column shifter and transmission lever in PARK position to ensure proper gear engagement
    Torque spec
    Adjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Verify shift operation
Cycle the shifter through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-2-1) and verify that the transmission shift lever moves through the corresponding positions. Check that the shifter returns to each detent position positively. Verify that the engine will only start in PARK and NEUTRAL positions.
  14. 14
    Reinstall steering column covers
Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers. Install and tighten the cover screws to specification. Ensure covers fit properly without binding on the cable or shifter mechanism.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall driver's side front wheel and torque lug nuts to specification
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Reconnect negative battery cable
  4. Remove wheel chocks

Verification

  • Start engine and verify it only starts in PARK and NEUTRAL positions
  • With engine running and brakes applied, shift through all gear positions and verify smooth engagement
  • Verify that each gear position on the column shifter corresponds to the correct transmission gear
  • Check that the shifter indicator aligns properly with each gear position
  • Road test vehicle through all gears to confirm proper shift cable operation and adjustment
  • Verify no unusual noises or binding in the shift cable during operation
