Speaker - Dash

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the dashboard-mounted speaker(s) in a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

• Speaker grille clips × 4 — Replace if broken during removal

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts
3. Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been in direct sunlight - hot plastic is more brittle
4. Identify which dash speaker requires replacement (driver side, passenger side, or center)

Procedure

1. 1

   Access speaker grille
   Locate the speaker grille on the dashboard. The grille is a small perforated cover on top of the dashboard. On many Ram models, the dash speakers are located at the outboard corners of the dashboard top near the windshield; note that some base trims have no dash speakers and use door-mounted speakers only. Verify your truck's speaker configuration before proceeding.

   Remove speaker grille
   Using a trim clip removal tool or panel removal tool, carefully pry up the speaker grille starting from one corner. The grille is held by 3-4 plastic clips. Work around the perimeter gently to release each clip without breaking them. Lift the grille away once all clips are released.
   ⚠Apply gentle, even pressure when prying - excessive force will crack the grille or break mounting clips

   Remove speaker mounting screws
   With the grille removed, you will see the speaker secured by 2-4 Phillips head screws around the perimeter. Remove these screws completely and set them aside. On some models, the speaker may have a small metal mounting bracket.

   Disconnect speaker electrical connector
   Carefully lift the speaker enough to access the electrical connector on the back. The connector is a small 2-wire plug that pushes onto blade terminals on the speaker. Pull the connector straight off the speaker terminals - do not pull on the wires themselves. If corrosion is present, clean the terminals with electrical contact cleaner.
   ⚠Pull connector by the plastic housing, not the wires - pulling wires can damage the harness

   Remove old speaker
   Once disconnected, remove the speaker completely from the dashboard opening. Inspect the mounting area for debris, broken clips, or damage. Clean the mounting surface if necessary.

   Install new speaker
   Place the new speaker into the dashboard opening, ensuring it is oriented correctly with the connector terminals accessible. Verify that any foam gasket or seal is properly positioned around the speaker perimeter to prevent rattling.

   Connect speaker electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector firmly onto the new speaker's blade terminals. Ensure the connector is fully seated and has good contact. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.

   Secure speaker with mounting screws
   Install the mounting screws through the speaker bracket or mounting holes. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Snug the screws securely but do not overtighten as this can warp the speaker frame or crack the plastic mounting surface.
   ⚠Do not overtighten speaker mounting screws - excessive torque will distort the speaker frame and affect sound quality

   Reinstall speaker grille
   Align the speaker grille over the speaker opening, ensuring all mounting clip locations line up with their receptacles in the dashboard. Press firmly around the perimeter until all clips engage with an audible click. Verify the grille is seated flush with the dashboard surface.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Battery terminal bolts are typically around 5 ft-lbs (7 Nm) but should be verified as no torque specification value is provided in the reference. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to start). Turn on the radio and test the new speaker across multiple volume levels and through different audio sources (AM, FM, CD if equipped) to verify proper operation and sound quality.

Reassembly

1. Ensure speaker grille is fully seated and all clips are engaged
2. Verify no tools or parts were left in the dashboard area
3. Check that all dashboard trim pieces are properly aligned and secure

Verification

• Test speaker operation with radio at low, medium, and high volume levels
• Verify no rattling, buzzing, or distortion from the speaker at any volume
• Confirm speaker grille is flush with dashboard and does not rattle during test drive
• Test balance/fader controls to verify proper channel operation
• Check that all dashboard trim pieces remain secure after test drive
