✓Fact-checked. Built from OLP's spec database, then independently fact-checked line by line with every correction applied. Master-tech sign-off by Chris Hackleman is queued. Cross-check torque values against the factory manual, and stop if anything looks unsafe. How our data is made.

Replace the front sway bar links on both sides to eliminate clunking noises and restore proper suspension geometry and handling.

Warnings

⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Suspension components are under tension. Control the sway bar when removing links to prevent sudden movement.
ℹ️Rusted or seized fasteners are common on these trucks. Apply penetrating oil 24 hours before starting work if possible.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. If fasteners appear rusty, apply penetrating oil to sway bar link nuts on both sides and allow to soak
  4. Loosen front wheel lug nuts 1/4 turn while vehicle is on ground

Procedure

  1. 1
    Raise and support vehicle
Lift the front of the vehicle using a floor jack at the front differential or frame crossmember. Raise high enough to remove wheels with clearance. Place jack stands under the frame rails on both sides near the front axle. Lower vehicle onto stands and verify stability before proceeding.
  2. 2
    Remove front wheels
Remove the lug nuts completely (verify correct socket size — 2500 models commonly use 33mm) and take off both front wheels. Set wheels aside in a safe location.
  3. 3
    Locate sway bar links
Identify the sway bar links connecting the sway bar to the front axle (spring perch/bracket) on each side. The links are vertical assemblies with ball studs on both ends. Clean the upper and lower nuts with a wire brush to expose flats for wrenches.
  4. 4
    Remove driver side upper nut
On the driver side link, insert a 6mm Allen key into the top of the ball stud to hold it from spinning. Using an 18mm wrench, remove the upper nut connecting the link to the sway bar. The ball stud may turn even with the Allen key—this is normal if the socket is worn.
  5. 5
    Remove driver side lower nut
Insert the 6mm Allen key into the bottom ball stud. Remove the lower 18mm nut connecting the link to the axle bracket. Remove the complete sway bar link assembly. Note the orientation of any washers or bushings.
  6. 6
    Remove passenger side link
Repeat the removal process on the passenger side. Remove upper nut while holding ball stud with Allen key, then remove lower nut. Extract the complete link assembly.
  7. 7
    Inspect sway bar and bushings
With links removed, inspect the sway bar itself for cracks or damage. Check the sway bar bushings at the frame mounts for wear or deterioration. Replace if torn or excessively worn.
  8. 8
    Install driver side new link
Position the new driver side sway bar link between the sway bar and the axle bracket. Install the lower nut first, threading it onto the ball stud by hand. Then install the upper nut by hand. Ensure any washers or bushings are in the correct orientation matching the original.
  9. 9
    Torque driver side link nuts
Hold the ball stud with the 6mm Allen key and torque the lower nut to the manufacturer-specified value (verify in service manual; typically approximately 70 ft-lbs for this platform) using an 18mm socket and torque wrench. Repeat for the upper nut. The shaft may still rotate slightly if the ball socket is new and tight.
    Torque spec
    Sway Bar Link61 Nm (45 lb-ft)
  10. 10
Install and torque passenger side link
Install the passenger side sway bar link in the same manner. Thread both nuts by hand first, then torque each nut while holding the ball stud with the Allen key.
    Torque spec
    Sway Bar Link61 Nm (45 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reinstall wheels
Mount both front wheels onto the hubs. Thread all lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern with the ratchet, but do not fully torque yet.
  12. 12
Lower vehicle and torque lug nuts
Raise the vehicle slightly with the floor jack to remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle completely to the ground. Torque the lug nuts on both wheels in a star pattern to specification.
    Torque spec
    Wheel Lug Nuts183 Nm (135 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all fasteners are properly torqued before driving
  2. Clean up any tools and parts from the work area
  3. Test drive vehicle at low speed to verify no clunking noises remain

Verification

  • Bounce each front corner of the vehicle and listen for clunking—should be silent
  • Visually inspect both sway bar links to ensure nuts are tight and links are not bent
  • Test drive over bumps and during turns to confirm proper operation and no noise
  • Recheck lug nut torque after 50-100 miles of driving
