Tail Light Assembly

Remove and replace the tail light assembly on a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500, including disconnecting the wiring harness and installing a new assembly with proper torque specifications.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition OFF and remove key
3. Lower tailgate fully for better access to tail light area
4. Clean exterior area around tail light to prevent dirt from entering cab when assembly is removed

Procedure

   Open tailgate and locate mounting bolts
   With the tailgate lowered for better access, locate the two screws securing the tail light assembly. On these trucks the fasteners are typically accessed from the outer rear edge of the assembly (near the bedside), not from inside the bed. Confirm fastener location for your specific model year before proceeding.

   Remove interior bed trim panel if equipped
   Some models have a small plastic trim panel covering the tail light mounting area. If present, carefully pry it away using a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver. Work gently to avoid breaking the plastic clips. Set panel and clips aside for reinstallation.

   Remove tail light mounting bolts
   Using the appropriate screwdriver or driver bit (commonly Phillips or Torx on these trucks), remove the two fasteners securing the tail light assembly from the outer rear edge. Support the tail light assembly with your other hand to prevent it from falling once the fasteners are removed. Keep these fasteners as they will be reused unless damaged.    Pull tail light assembly away from body
   Carefully pull the tail light assembly straight back away from the vehicle body. It may require gentle wiggling to separate the seal/gasket from the body. Do not pull too hard as the wiring harness is still connected. Pull it out approximately 4-6 inches to access the connector.

   Disconnect wiring harness connector
   Locate the wiring harness connector on the back of the tail light assembly. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight out from the tail light socket housing. If the connector is corroded or stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling. Avoid pulling on the wires themselves.

   Remove old tail light assembly
   With the connector disconnected, fully remove the tail light assembly from the vehicle. Inspect the old gasket/seal and remove it from either the vehicle body or the old assembly. Check the mounting surface on the vehicle body for damage, corrosion, or debris.

   Clean mounting surface and prepare new assembly
   Clean the tail light mounting surface on the vehicle body with a wire brush or sandpaper if corrosion is present. Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Remove the new tail light assembly from packaging and verify it matches the old assembly. Install the new gasket/seal onto the back of the new assembly if not pre-installed.

   Connect wiring harness to new assembly
   Before installing the assembly, connect the wiring harness to the back of the new tail light assembly. Push the connector in firmly until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.

   Position new tail light assembly
   Carefully guide the new tail light assembly into position, ensuring the wiring is not pinched or kinked. Align the mounting holes in the assembly with the holes in the vehicle body. The gasket should seat evenly against the body panel. Press gently to compress the gasket slightly.

    Install and torque mounting bolts
    From inside the bed, insert the two mounting bolts through the holes and thread them into the tail light assembly by hand. Once both bolts are started, tighten them evenly in an alternating pattern to seat the assembly properly. Snug the fasteners by hand until the assembly is seated firmly against the body; do not use a torque wrench. Tighten just until the gasket is lightly compressed.     Reinstall bed trim panel if equipped
    If a trim panel was removed in Step 2, align it with the mounting clips and press firmly until all clips are fully seated. Verify the panel is secure and flush with surrounding surfaces.

    Test tail light operation
    Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to start). Turn on the headlights and verify the tail light illuminates. Test brake lights by having an assistant press the brake pedal. Test turn signals on the affected side. Verify all bulbs in the assembly are functioning properly. If any bulbs do not work, verify the wiring connector is fully seated.

Reassembly

1. Ensure gasket is properly seated and there are no gaps between the tail light assembly and body panel
2. Verify wiring harness has sufficient slack and is not stretched or pinched
3. Check that mounting bolts are torqued evenly to prevent assembly misalignment

Verification

• All tail light functions (running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights if equipped) operate correctly
• No gaps visible between tail light assembly and vehicle body that could allow water intrusion
• Assembly is secure with no rattling or movement when pressed by hand
• Bed trim panel (if equipped) is fully secured with all clips engaged
