Transmission Control Module

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on the 47RE/48RE automatic transmission used in 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect both negative and positive battery cables (negative first) to prevent electrical damage
4. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 10 minutes to discharge capacitors in electrical system
5. Use OBD-II scan tool to retrieve and record all transmission-related diagnostic trouble codes
6. If possible, record current TCM software version and VIN programming information
7. Raise vehicle using appropriate lift or jack stands if additional clearance is needed for access
8. Position drain pan under transmission to catch any residual fluid spillage

Procedure

1. 1

   Locate the Transmission Control Module
   On 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cummins diesel and 47RE/48RE transmission, there is no separate case-mounted Transmission Control Module. Transmission control is integrated into the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which is mounted in the engine compartment on the driver's side (firewall/inner fender area). Locate the PCM and clean the surrounding area before beginning work.

   Disconnect TCM electrical connector
   Locate the large electrical connector on the TCM. Press the locking tab or slide the lock mechanism (varies by year) and carefully pull the connector straight away from the TCM. Do not twist or bend the connector. Inspect connector pins for corrosion, damage, or bent terminals. Note the orientation and routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
   ⚠The TCM connector contains sensitive electronics. Avoid touching the exposed pins and protect from moisture and contamination.

   Remove TCM mounting bolts
   Remove the PCM mounting fasteners retaining the module to its bracket in the engine compartment. Verify fastener size and quantity against the actual mounting hardware. Keep track of fastener locations as some may differ in length. Keep track of bolt locations as some may be different lengths. Support the TCM with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.

   Remove TCM from transmission
   The transmission-control function resides in the firewall-mounted PCM, which is a dry electronic module with no gasket and no transmission fluid present. Remove the PCM mounting fasteners and lift the module away from its bracket. Place the old PCM on a clean, dry, static-safe surface.ontamination.

   Inspect mounting surface and connector cavity
   Inspect the PCM mounting bracket and electrical connectors for corrosion, damage, or debris. Ensure the connector seals are intact. Clean the connector faces gently and do not allow contamination into the pins.

   Prepare new TCM for installation
   Remove the new TCM from its packaging. Verify the part number matches the old unit and is correct for your specific transmission. The PCM is a dry electronic module and requires no gasket or fluid. Do not apply any lubricant or ATF to the module. Do not touch the electrical connector pins on the PCM.

   Install new TCM
   Position the PCM on its mounting bracket in the engine compartment and align the mounting holes. Do not force the module into place.
   ⚠Misalignment of TCM pins can cause permanent damage to the valve body connector. Ensure proper alignment before applying pressure.

   Install TCM mounting bolts
   Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper threading. Tighten bolts in a criss-cross pattern to ensure even seating of the module and gasket. Torque bolts to specification using a calibrated torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can crack the TCM housing or damage the transmission case.

   Reconnect TCM electrical connector
   Inspect the electrical connector again for any debris. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector pins if desired for corrosion protection. Align the connector with the TCM and push firmly until it clicks into place. Verify the locking tab or mechanism engages completely. Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is fully seated and locked.

    Reconnect battery and perform initial checks
    Reconnect the positive battery cable first, then the negative cable. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. The check engine light and other warning lights should illuminate briefly then turn off. The transmission may need to be in Park for the system to initialize. Do not start the engine yet.

    Program and configure TCM
    For 1996 and later vehicles, connect an OBD-II scan tool with Mopar capability and perform PCM programming, VIN programming, or software flash as required. For 1994-1995 vehicles, OBD-II is not present; use the appropriate era-correct diagnostic and programming procedure. This step may require dealer-level equipment or a qualified shop with Mopar programming capability. Follow all prompts and do not disconnect power during programming. After programming is complete, clear any diagnostic trouble codes that may have been set during installation.
    ⚠️Do not interrupt power or disconnect the scan tool during TCM programming. This can brick the module and render it unusable.

    Start engine and verify operation
    Start the engine and allow it to idle. Monitor for any warning lights or abnormal behavior. The transmission should engage smoothly when shifted into Drive or Reverse. Check scan tool for any new diagnostic trouble codes. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature while monitoring transmission behavior.

Reassembly

1. Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
2. Check the area around the TCM for any fluid leaks after installation
3. Lower vehicle if it was raised for access
4. Verify transmission fluid level is correct after test drive

Verification

• Start the engine and verify no warning lights remain illuminated after initial bulb check
• Using scan tool, verify the TCM is communicating properly and shows no active diagnostic trouble codes
• Test drive the vehicle through all gear ranges, verifying smooth shifts and proper operation in all gears
• Verify transmission shifts properly under light, moderate, and heavy throttle conditions
• Check for proper torque converter lockup operation during highway driving
• Perform a final scan for trouble codes after test drive
• Verify no transmission fluid leaks from the TCM mounting area
• Confirm proper kickdown and passing gear operation
• If adaptive learning is available on your scan tool, verify the TCM is learning shift points properly
