TPMS Relearn

This procedure explains how to perform a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) relearn on 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 trucks. Note that TPMS was not standard equipment on most models in this generation until 2008, so this procedure only applies to late-model 2007 vehicles equipped with the optional TPMS system.

Preparation

1. Verify that the vehicle is equipped with TPMS by checking for a TPMS warning light in the instrument cluster
2. Ensure all four tires (plus spare if equipped with TPMS spare) are inflated to the correct pressure as listed on the driver door jamb placard
3. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
4. Turn ignition to OFF position

Procedure

   Check and adjust tire pressures
   Using a tire pressure gauge, verify all four tires are inflated to the pressures specified on the driver door jamb placard. Adjust as necessary. Always set cold tire pressures to the exact values listed on the driver door jamb placard for your specific model and load configuration; do not rely on generic pressure figures.

   Turn ignition to RUN position
   Insert key and turn ignition to the RUN position (do not start engine). Wait for the instrument cluster to complete its self-check sequence. The TPMS warning light should illuminate briefly then extinguish if the system is functioning properly.

   Enter TPMS relearn mode
   This generation Ram 2500 was not equipped with a factory TPMS, so no factory relearn procedure exists. If an aftermarket TPMS has been installed, follow the specific relearn method documented by that kit's manufacturer (drive-cycle, valve-stem tool activation, or scan-tool programming as applicable).

   Activate sensors with TPMS tool (if using manual relearn method)
   If using a TPMS relearn tool, start at the left front tire. Hold the TPMS tool against the tire sidewall near the valve stem and activate it. The horn will chirp or the turn signal will flash to indicate the sensor has been recognized. Proceed to the remaining tires in the exact sequence specified by your TPMS tool or aftermarket kit instructions, as the correct order varies by system. Some tools may require different activation sequences.

   Complete relearn procedure
   If using scan tool method, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the relearn. If using the drive method, continue driving for the full 10-minute period at varying speeds. The TPMS warning light should extinguish once all sensors have been successfully relearned.

   Cycle ignition and verify system operation
   Turn the ignition OFF, wait 10 seconds, then turn back to RUN. Observe the TPMS warning light. It should illuminate briefly during bulb check, then extinguish. If the light remains on or flashes, the relearn was not successful and the procedure should be repeated.

Reassembly

1. No disassembly required for this procedure

Verification

• Start the engine and verify the TPMS warning light is not illuminated
• Use a scan tool to verify all four (or five if spare equipped) TPMS sensors are communicating and reporting correct pressures
• Test drive the vehicle for several miles and confirm the TPMS light does not illuminate
• Reduce pressure in one tire by 10 PSI to verify the system detects the low pressure condition and illuminates the warning light, then re-inflate to proper pressure
