This procedure covers the adjustment of the transmission kickdown cable (also called throttle valve cable) on the 47RE/48RE automatic transmission to ensure proper transmission shift points and line pressure.
Warnings
⚠Engine must be fully warmed up for accurate adjustment. Cold engine adjustments will result in improper transmission operation.
⚠Incorrect kickdown cable adjustment can cause harsh shifting, slipping, delayed engagement, or transmission damage.
ℹ️This procedure applies to 47RE and 48RE automatic transmissions paired with the 5.9L Cummins. Manual transmissions do not use a kickdown cable.

Parts
- Transmission kickdown cable × 1 — Use OEM specification if cable is damaged

Preparation
- Warm engine to full operating temperature (minimum 10 minutes of driving or idling)
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Allow engine to idle and ensure transmission is in Park
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate the kickdown cable at the injection pump throttle lever (driver side of engine)
Procedure
- 1Locate kickdown cable assemblyIdentify the kickdown cable running from the transmission to the injection pump throttle lever on the driver side of the engine. The cable attaches to a ball stud on the throttle lever arm and has an adjustment mechanism near the cable housing bracket.
- 2Inspect cable conditionCheck the cable housing for cracks, kinks, or damage. Inspect the cable end fittings for wear or corrosion. Verify the cable moves freely without binding. If cable is damaged or binds, replacement is required before adjustment.
- 3Release cable adjuster lockLocate the adjuster mechanism on the cable housing near the bracket. Lift or release the spring-loaded locking tab (design varies by year) to unlock the sliding adjuster so the cable housing can move within the bracket. Some models require inserting a small screwdriver to depress the locking tab.
- 4Move throttle to idle positionWith engine idling, ensure the injection pump throttle lever is fully returned to the idle stop position. The cable should have minimal slack but should not pull the lever away from the idle stop.
- 5Set cable to zero pressure positionWith the injection pump throttle lever held firmly against its full-throttle stop, pull the cable slider through the adjuster housing to remove all slack from the cable inner wire until taut but not stretched. Hold this position for the next step.
- 6Lock adjuster in positionWhile maintaining gentle tension on the cable housing, press the adjuster lock mechanism back into its locked position. You should hear or feel it click into place. Release the cable housing - it should remain in this adjusted position.
- 7Verify full throttle travelHave an assistant press the accelerator pedal to the floor while you observe the throttle lever. The lever should travel to its full throttle stop position without the cable limiting its movement. The cable should reach full extension just as the lever hits the stop.
- 8Check idle returnHave the assistant release the accelerator pedal. Verify the throttle lever returns fully to the idle stop without the cable preventing full return. There should be a small amount of freeplay at idle so the cable does not pull the lever off the idle stop (verify exact spec against the factory service manual).
- 9Test adjustment under loadWith vehicle still in Park, briefly increase engine RPM to 1500-2000 RPM and release. Observe smooth cable operation and complete return to idle. If cable binds or does not return properly, inspect routing and repeat adjustment.
Reassembly
- No disassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Road test vehicle through all gears, noting smooth shift points between 1st-2nd at approximately 15 mph, 2nd-3rd at approximately 25 mph, and 3rd-4th (overdrive) at approximately 45 mph under light throttle
- Verify transmission downshifts properly when accelerator is pressed beyond 3/4 throttle at highway speeds
- Confirm no harsh or delayed shifts occur during normal driving
- Check that transmission engages smoothly into Drive and Reverse from Park
- If shifts are too early or soft, cable may be too loose - readjust with slightly more tension
- If shifts are harsh or too late, cable may be too tight - readjust with slightly less tension
