Trunk/Liftgate Actuator

This procedure replaces the tailgate latch actuator assembly on 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 pickups with tailgates, enabling proper power lock/unlock function.

• Tailgate latch actuator assembly × 1 — Use OEM Mopar or quality aftermarket
• Tailgate handle access panel clips (if broken) × 2 — Optional replacement

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake firmly
2. Open tailgate fully and support in open position
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and isolate cable away from battery post to prevent contact
4. Wait 2 minutes after battery disconnect for airbag system capacitor discharge
5. Clean exterior of tailgate handle area to prevent debris from entering mechanism during service

Procedure

   Remove tailgate interior access panel
   From inside the tailgate, locate the rectangular plastic access panel on the driver side interior. Use a flat-blade trim tool to carefully pry out the panel starting at the bottom edge. Remove the panel completely to expose the latch actuator assembly and wiring harness. Set panel and any retaining clips aside for reinstallation.

   Disconnect actuator electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector attached to the tailgate latch actuator. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull straight back to disconnect. If connector is corroded or difficult to remove, spray with electrical contact cleaner and allow to penetrate before attempting removal. Do not pull on wires.

   Remove actuator mounting bolts
   Using a 10mm socket, remove the three mounting bolts securing the actuator assembly to the tailgate inner structure. Support the actuator with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the orientation and position of the actuator for proper installation of replacement unit.

   Disconnect actuator rod from latch mechanism
   Carefully pull the actuator away from the tailgate structure approximately 2 inches. Locate the actuator rod connection to the latch mechanism. Rotate the plastic rod retaining clip 90 degrees counterclockwise and slide the rod end off the latch lever ball stud. Control the actuator rod to prevent it from snapping back. Remove the complete actuator assembly from the tailgate.
   ⚠The actuator rod is under slight spring tension. Control it during disconnection to prevent injury or damage to surrounding components.

   Inspect latch mechanism and clean mounting area
   With actuator removed, inspect the latch mechanism ball stud for wear or damage. The ball should be smooth without excessive play. Use a wire brush to clean the actuator mounting surface on the tailgate structure, removing any rust or debris. Clean ground contact surfaces if ground strap is present at mounting location.

   Prepare new actuator assembly
   Remove new actuator from packaging and verify it matches the original unit in rod length, connector type, and mounting hole pattern. Test the actuator operation by briefly connecting it to the vehicle harness connector and reconnecting battery negative terminal. Use key fob or door lock switch to cycle the actuator several times, then disconnect battery again. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector terminals on the new actuator.
   ℹ️Testing the new actuator before installation confirms function and prevents having to remove tailgate panel twice if the part is defective.

   Connect actuator rod to latch mechanism
   Position the new actuator assembly near the tailgate structure with the actuator rod aligned to the latch mechanism. Slide the rod end onto the latch lever ball stud and rotate the plastic retaining clip 90 degrees clockwise to lock in place. Verify the rod is securely attached by gently tugging on the actuator body.

   Install actuator mounting bolts
   Align the actuator mounting holes with the threaded holes in the tailgate structure. Install all three 10mm mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. If a ground strap is present at any mounting location, ensure clean metal-to-metal contact. Torque mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench in a cross pattern.

   Connect electrical connector
   Push the wiring harness connector firmly onto the actuator until the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Route the wiring harness so it does not contact any moving parts of the latch mechanism.

    Reinstall tailgate access panel
    Position the plastic access panel over the opening in the tailgate interior. Press firmly around all edges to seat the retaining clips. Ensure the panel is flush with the surrounding tailgate surface and all clips are fully engaged.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the battery terminal clamp snugly by hand until secure, being careful not to overtighten. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post. Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Cycle the door locks several times using the key fob and interior lock switches to initialize the body control module and verify all door lock actuators respond properly.
    ⚠Battery terminal bolts must not be overtightened. Excessive torque will crack the battery post causing battery failure and potential acid leakage.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
2. Verify tailgate closes and latches properly with smooth operation
3. Confirm access panel is securely clipped in place with no gaps
4. Check that no tools or parts were left inside the tailgate cavity

Verification

• With vehicle running, use key fob to lock all doors and listen for tailgate actuator operation - you should hear a distinct click from the tailgate latch
• Use key fob to unlock all doors and verify tailgate actuator cycles in opposite direction
• Manually test tailgate operation by closing and opening several times to ensure latch engages and releases smoothly
• Use interior door lock switch to cycle locks and verify tailgate actuator responds to all lock/unlock commands
• Close tailgate and attempt to open without pressing release button - tailgate should remain securely latched
• Verify security system arms and disarms properly if vehicle is equipped with factory alarm
