Power Window Regulator - Rear

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear power window regulator assembly on a Quad Cab or Mega Cab 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal to prevent accidental window motor activation during repair
3. Roll rear window to approximately mid-position for easiest access to regulator mounting bolts
4. Ensure you have adequate lighting inside the door cavity

Procedure

   Remove door panel trim components
   Remove the rear door panel screw covers and retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver or T30 Torx driver as required for your trim. On 2003+ models, remove the armrest pull cup by prying gently. Remove any power window/lock switch bezels by carefully prying from the rear edge and disconnect the electrical connectors.

   Remove rear door panel
   Using a door panel removal tool, disengage the plastic retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Start at the bottom rear corner and work your way around. Once all clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage from the window sill channel, then pull away from door. Set aside in a safe location.

   Peel back vapor barrier
   Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier to access the window regulator mechanism. Only remove enough of the barrier to access the regulator mounting bolts and motor connector. Try to preserve the adhesive for reinstallation, or prepare replacement barrier material if damaged.

   Secure window glass
   With the window in the mid-position, use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame, or insert wooden blocks or window support sticks between the glass and the bottom of the door cavity to prevent the window from falling when disconnected from the regulator. Ensure the glass is stable before proceeding.

   Disconnect window motor electrical connector
   Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Route the connector away from the regulator assembly.

   Disconnect window glass from regulator
   Locate the two bolts securing the window glass channel to the regulator lift mechanism. These are typically 10mm bolts accessible through access holes in the door frame. Remove both bolts and carefully separate the glass from the regulator. Ensure the glass remains supported.

   Remove regulator mounting bolts
   Locate all regulator mounting bolts securing the regulator assembly to the door frame. There are typically 3-4 bolts depending on configuration. Remove all mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. Support the regulator assembly as you remove the final bolt.

   Remove regulator assembly from door
   Carefully maneuver the regulator assembly out through the large access opening in the door frame. The regulator mechanism may need to be rotated or angled to clear the door structure. Be cautious of the regulator spring tension during removal.

   Install new regulator assembly
   Position the new regulator assembly and maneuver it into the door cavity through the access opening. Align the regulator mounting holes with the door frame mounting points. Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening any of them.

    Torque regulator mounting bolts
    Tighten all regulator mounting bolts to approximately 7-9 ft-lbs (10-12 Nm) using a torque wrench; verify against factory specification. Tighten in a cross-pattern to ensure even distribution. Verify the regulator moves freely after installation.

    Reconnect window glass to regulator
    Remove window supports or tape and align the window glass channel with the regulator lift mechanism. Install the two mounting bolts and torque to approximately 6-8 ft-lbs (8-10 Nm); verify against factory specification. Ensure the glass is properly seated in the regulator channel before tightening.

    Reconnect electrical and test operation
    Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal and snug the clamp bolt to approximately 5 ft-lbs (7 Nm). Test window operation through full up and down travel several times to verify proper installation and alignment. Disconnect battery again before final reassembly.

    Reinstall vapor barrier and door panel
    Reposition the vapor barrier, ensuring a good seal around the edges. Replace with new barrier material if original was damaged. Align the door panel with the window sill channel and slide down into position. Press firmly around all clip locations to fully seat the panel. Reinstall all screws and trim pieces.

Reassembly

1. Replace any broken door panel retaining clips before reinstalling the panel
2. Ensure vapor barrier is properly sealed to prevent moisture intrusion and wind noise
3. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated before final testing
4. Reconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification

Verification

• Test window operation through complete up and down travel multiple times
• Verify window reaches full up position and seals properly against weatherstripping
• Check that window reaches full down position without binding
• Listen for unusual noises during window operation
• Verify auto-down function works properly if equipped
• Check door panel for proper fitment and all clips engaged
