Wiper Switch

Replace the wiper switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 1994-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

• Multifunction switch (wiper switch) × 1 — Use OEM Mopar or equivalent
• Electrical contact cleaner × 1 — As needed

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and secure away from terminal
4. Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
5. Ensure steering wheel is centered and wheels are pointing straight ahead

Procedure

   Remove lower steering column covers
   Locate and remove the two Phillips screws securing the lower steering column cover. The screws are typically located at the bottom of the cover. Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside. On some models, you may need to remove the upper cover first by prying gently at the seam.

   Remove upper steering column covers
   Remove the screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws). Separate the upper cover halves and remove completely. Take care not to damage any wiring or components during removal.

   Locate multifunction switch
   Identify the multifunction switch mounted on the left side of the steering column. This switch assembly contains the wiper control stalk and is secured by mounting screws (verify screw type and count against your specific model year, commonly Torx or Phillips). Note the routing of the wiring harness for reassembly.

   Disconnect wiring harness connector
   Locate the wiring harness connector at the base of the multifunction switch. Depress the locking tab on the connector and pull straight out to disconnect. If connector is difficult to access, you may need to remove the switch mounting screws first to gain access.

   Remove multifunction switch mounting screws
   Using the appropriate driver, remove the screws securing the multifunction switch to the steering column (verify screw type and count for your specific model year). Support the switch as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.

   Remove old multifunction switch
   Carefully pull the multifunction switch assembly out from the steering column housing. The switch is retained by its mounting screws and electrical connector, not a splined shaft.    Inspect and clean connector
   Inspect the wiring harness connector for corrosion, bent pins, or damage. Clean connector terminals with electrical contact cleaner if necessary. Inspect the steering column mounting area and clean any debris or corrosion.

   Install new multifunction switch
   Position the new multifunction switch against the steering column housing in the correct orientation (verify stalk side against the removed switch). Seat the switch fully against the mounting bosses before installing screws.

   Install mounting screws
   Install the mounting screws to secure the multifunction switch to the steering column (verify type and count for your model year). Snug them evenly until the switch is firmly seated against the column housing; do not overtighten into the plastic housing.
   Torque spec

   Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)

    Reconnect wiring harness
    Connect the wiring harness connector to the multifunction switch. Push firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Position the upper steering column cover halves around the column and secure with screws. Install the lower steering column cover and secure with Phillips screws. Ensure all covers are properly aligned and seated before tightening screws.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect the negative battery cable(s) to the battery terminal(s); note the 5.9L Cummins uses dual batteries. Tighten the battery terminal clamp bolt securely (approximately 5-7 ft-lbs). Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

1. Ensure all wiring harness connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify steering column covers are properly installed with no gaps
3. Check that wiper control stalk operates smoothly through all positions
4. Confirm no wiring is pinched between covers or components

Verification

• Turn ignition to RUN position (do not start engine)
• Test wiper switch through all positions: off, intermittent (all delay settings), low speed, and high speed
• Verify washer function operates correctly when wiper switch is pulled
• Test turn signal and high beam functions to ensure multifunction switch operates properly in all modes
• Start engine and verify wipers operate correctly at all speeds under load
• Check for proper intermittent wiper delay operation
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster
