Fact-checked. Built from OLP's spec database, then independently fact-checked line by line with every correction applied. Master-tech sign-off by Chris Hackleman is queued. Cross-check torque values against the factory manual, and stop if anything looks unsafe. How our data is made.

Remove and reinstall the instrument cluster assembly from the dashboard to service gauges, circuit board, or bulbs.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before beginning work to prevent airbag deployment and electrical shorts.
The instrument cluster circuit board contains delicate electronic components. Handle by edges only and avoid touching circuit traces or gauge movement mechanisms.
ℹ️The 1992 Viper dash is configured differently than later model years. This procedure applies specifically to the 1992 model year first-generation RT/10.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key.
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post.
  4. Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge.
  5. Adjust steering column to lowest position for maximum access to upper dash area.
  6. If available, photograph or sketch instrument cluster connector orientations before disconnection to aid reassembly.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove steering column covers
Locate the Phillips screws securing the upper and lower steering column shroud halves. Remove 3 screws from the lower shroud. Separate the lower shroud from the column and remove. Remove 2 screws from the upper shroud, then carefully lift the upper shroud up and over the column stalk controls. Set both shroud pieces aside.
  2. 2
    Remove instrument cluster bezel
Identify the instrument cluster bezel (decorative trim ring surrounding the gauge cluster). Locate fasteners securing the bezel—these are typically located at the top edge and sides of the bezel. Remove 4 fasteners securing the bezel to the dashboard structure. Gently pull the bezel forward from the dashboard, disengaging any remaining clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors attached to the bezel (if equipped with integrated switches or lighting). Remove bezel completely.
  3. 3
    Access instrument cluster mounting fasteners
With the bezel removed, the instrument cluster mounting screws are now visible. Identify 4 screws securing the cluster to the dashboard carrier. These are located at the corners of the cluster assembly. Using a 10mm socket or appropriate screwdriver, remove all 4 cluster mounting fasteners. Keep fasteners organized for reinstallation.
  4. 4
Pull cluster forward and access connectors
Carefully pull the instrument cluster forward approximately 3-4 inches from the dashboard opening. Work slowly to avoid straining wiring harnesses. Angle the cluster as needed to gain access to the rear of the assembly. Use a flashlight to illuminate the connector locations on the back of the cluster.
  5. 5
    Disconnect speedometer cable
The 1992 Viper uses an electronic speedometer driven by a vehicle speed sensor—there is NO mechanical speedometer cable at the cluster. Skip any cable disconnection; the speedometer signal is carried through the main electrical connectors handled in the next step.
  6. 6
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Identify the main electrical connectors at the rear of the cluster. The 1992 Viper typically has 2 large multi-pin connectors supplying power, ground, and sensor signals. Depress the locking tabs on each connector while pulling straight back to disconnect. If connectors are difficult to access, mark their orientation with tape before removal. Disconnect all electrical connectors until the cluster is completely free.
  7. 7
    Remove instrument cluster from vehicle
With all connectors and cables disconnected, carefully withdraw the instrument cluster assembly through the dashboard opening. Angle the cluster as needed to clear the steering column and dashboard structure. Place the cluster on a clean, padded work surface with the lens facing up to prevent damage to gauge needles or circuit board.
  8. 8
    Service instrument cluster (as required)
Perform required service work on the cluster assembly. If replacing bulbs, remove the cluster lens by releasing retaining clips or removing screws around the perimeter. Twist and remove faulty bulb sockets counterclockwise. For circuit board service, remove additional fasteners securing the gauge faces and circuit board to the housing. Handle all electronic components by edges only. Replace failed components as needed. Reassemble cluster sub-components in reverse order before reinstallation.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the rear of the instrument cluster, ensuring locking tabs fully engage.
  2. Reconnect the speedometer cable, threading or engaging the fitting completely—verify the cable is not kinked.
  3. Carefully guide the cluster assembly back into the dashboard opening, ensuring no wiring is pinched behind the cluster.
  4. Align mounting holes and install all 4 cluster mounting fasteners, tightening evenly in a cross pattern.
  5. Reinstall the instrument cluster bezel, reconnecting any integrated electrical connectors first, then securing all fasteners and engaging clips.
  6. Reinstall upper and lower steering column shrouds, ensuring stalk controls pass through correctly and all fasteners are secured.
  7. Reconnect battery negative terminal.
  8. Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify all gauges sweep correctly, all warning lights illuminate, and all cluster bulbs function.

Verification

  • With ignition ON, verify all gauge needles rest at correct positions (fuel, temp, oil pressure, speedometer at zero).
  • Start engine and confirm oil pressure gauge responds immediately, temperature gauge begins to rise as engine warms, and no warning lights remain illuminated abnormally.
  • Test drive vehicle briefly and verify speedometer and tachometer operate correctly throughout RPM range.
  • Verify all instrument cluster illumination bulbs function with headlights on.
  • Check that all warning lights (check engine, ABS, airbag, etc.) illuminate during bulb check at key-on and extinguish after engine start.
  • Inspect cluster bezel and steering column covers for proper fit and secure mounting with no rattles.
