Seat Belt

This procedure covers removal and installation of seat belt assemblies (buckle, retractor, and anchors) for the 1992 Dodge Viper, including proper torque specifications for safety-critical mounting hardware.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes to ensure any supplemental restraint system capacitors are discharged
3. Identify which seat belt assembly requires replacement (driver/passenger, front only on 1992 Viper)
4. Photograph seat belt routing and anchor positions before removal for reference during installation

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove B-pillar trim cover
   Locate the seat belt anchor trim on the rear bulkhead/roll structure behind the seat on the side requiring replacement. Carefully remove any trim covering the upper anchor and retractor mounting to expose the mounting points. Note: the 1992 Viper RT/10 roadster does not have a conventional B-pillar; belts mount to the rear bulkhead structure.

   Remove upper seat belt anchor bolt
   Locate the upper seat belt anchor bolt at the top of the B-pillar. This is typically a Torx fastener. Using the appropriate driver (verify: seat belt anchor bolts are commonly 7/16-20 hex-head, not Torx, on 1992 Viper), remove the upper anchor bolt. Support the seat belt assembly as you remove the bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the position of any washers or spacers on the anchor bolt.

   Remove seat belt retractor assembly
   Locate the seat belt retractor mounting bolts on the B-pillar or lower body structure. Remove the retractor mounting fastener(s) (verify count and fastener type against the Viper service manual before proceeding). Carefully pull the retractor assembly away from the mounting surface, allowing the seat belt webbing to extend fully. Set the retractor assembly aside.

   Remove lower seat belt anchor
   Locate the lower seat belt anchor bolt on the transmission tunnel or floor pan adjacent to the seat. This anchor secures the buckle assembly or latch plate. Using a T50 Torx bit, remove the lower anchor bolt. Note the position of any washers or reinforcement plates under the anchor.

   Remove buckle anchor (if applicable)
   If replacing the buckle side of the seat belt assembly, locate the buckle anchor bolt on the inboard side of the seat mounting area. Remove the buckle anchor bolt using a T50 Torx bit. Carefully route the buckle assembly out from under any trim or carpet edges.

   Remove complete seat belt assembly
   With all anchor points disconnected, carefully remove the complete seat belt assembly from the vehicle. Check the seat belt webbing routing path and ensure no portions are trapped under trim pieces or carpet. Inspect all mounting points for corrosion or damage that may require repair before installing the new assembly.

   Prepare new seat belt assembly
   Unpack the new seat belt assembly and verify it matches the original configuration. Identify the retractor end, upper anchor loop, lower anchor, and buckle components. Check that all mounting hardware is included and that fasteners are the correct type and size.

   Install buckle anchor (if applicable)
   Position the buckle assembly at its mounting location on the inboard side of the seat area. Align the buckle anchor with the mounting hole and insert the anchor bolt through any washers or reinforcement plates in their original positions. Thread the bolt by hand, but do not fully tighten yet.

   Install lower seat belt anchor
   Route the seat belt webbing to the lower anchor position on the transmission tunnel or floor pan. Position any washers or reinforcement plates, then insert the lower anchor bolt. Thread the bolt by hand to ensure proper alignment before tightening.

    Install seat belt retractor assembly
    Position the seat belt retractor assembly at its mounting location on the B-pillar or lower body structure. Align the 2 mounting holes and insert the retractor mounting bolts. Thread the bolts by hand, then torque to specification using a T40 Torx bit and torque wrench.

    Install upper seat belt anchor
    Route the seat belt webbing through any trim guides or loops along the B-pillar. Position the upper anchor loop at the top B-pillar mounting point. Install any washers or spacers in their original positions, then insert the upper anchor bolt. Using the appropriate driver and torque wrench, torque the upper anchor bolt to the manufacturer specification (verify against Viper service manual; seat belt anchors are typically ~40 Nm / 30 lb-ft).

    Torque lower anchor and buckle anchor bolts
    Using the appropriate driver and torque wrench, torque the lower seat belt anchor bolt to the manufacturer specification (verify; typically ~40 Nm / 30 lb-ft). If applicable, torque the buckle anchor bolt to the same specification. Verify all anchor bolts are seated properly and washers/reinforcement plates are correctly positioned.
    ⚠️These are safety-critical fasteners. Ensure torque wrench is properly calibrated and torque specifications are met exactly.

    Reinstall B-pillar trim cover
    Position the B-pillar trim cover over the retractor area. Align all retaining clips with their receptacles in the body structure. Press firmly along all clip locations to seat the trim cover completely. Verify the trim is flush and all clips are engaged.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect negative battery cable
2. Verify seat belt retracts smoothly and locks when pulled sharply or during forward vehicle tilt
3. Check that buckle latches and releases properly with audible click

Verification

• Pull seat belt webbing fully extended and release to verify retractor operation and smooth retraction without binding
• Perform sharp pull test on webbing to confirm emergency locking mechanism engages properly
• Latch and unlatch buckle several times to verify positive engagement and release
• Inspect all anchor points to ensure bolts are tight and no gaps exist between mounting hardware and body structure
• Check that trim panels are secure and seat belt webbing routes correctly through all guides without twisting
