Procedure to remove and replace the foam cushion in the driver or passenger seat of a 1992 Dodge Viper, requiring seat removal and upholstery cover separation from the seat frame.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake.
2. Move seat fully forward or rearward to access the mounting bolts most easily.
3. Verify which seat requires foam replacement (driver or passenger) and clear the surrounding area of debris.

Procedure

   Remove seat mounting bolts
   Locate the seat mounting bolts securing the seat track assembly to the floor, typically positioned at the front and rear of each seat rail. Verify the exact number and location against factory documentation, then use a socket to remove all mounting bolts and retain them for reinstallation.

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Carefully lift the seat assembly straight up and out of the vehicle. The 1992 Viper seats are not electrically connected in stock configuration. If aftermarket heated seats or other accessories are present, disconnect any wiring harnesses before fully removing the seat. Transport the seat to a clean work surface.

   Position seat for disassembly
   Place the seat upside down on a clean work surface with padding or a blanket underneath to protect the upholstery. Ensure adequate workspace around all sides of the seat.

   Remove hog rings from seat bottom
   Locate the hog rings securing the upholstery cover to the seat frame along the bottom perimeter. Use hog ring pliers to compress and remove each hog ring. Work systematically around the entire perimeter, counting and removing approximately 15-20 hog rings. Set the old hog rings aside for disposal.

   Separate upholstery from seat frame
   Once all hog rings are removed, carefully peel the upholstery cover away from the seat foam and frame. Work slowly to avoid tearing the cover material. Note the orientation and attachment points of any plastic clips or retaining tabs that may be present along the edges.

   Remove old seat foam
   Lift the old foam cushion away from the seat frame. Inspect the condition of the seat pan and any cushion support springs or webbing. If the foam is glued to the seat pan, carefully peel or cut it free. Clean any residual adhesive from the seat pan using a scraper or appropriate solvent if necessary.

   Install new seat foam
   Position the new foam cushion onto the seat pan, aligning it with the seat frame contours. Ensure the foam is oriented correctly with any molded features (such as side bolsters or lumbar contours) matching the original position. If the original foam was adhesive-bonded, apply appropriate upholstery adhesive to the seat pan and press the new foam firmly into place, allowing adequate cure time per adhesive manufacturer instructions.

   Reattach upholstery cover
   Stretch the upholstery cover back over the new foam cushion, working from one side to the other. Ensure the cover is properly aligned with no wrinkles or bunching. Verify that all seams are correctly positioned and the cover material is evenly tensioned across the foam.

   Install new hog rings
   Using hog ring pliers, install new hog rings at the same locations where the original rings were removed. Pull the upholstery material taut before securing each ring to ensure proper tension. Work around the entire perimeter, installing approximately 15-20 new hog rings. Ensure each ring is fully compressed and secure.

    Inspect completed seat assembly
    Turn the seat right-side up and inspect the upholstery for proper fit and finish. Check that all seams are straight, the cover is evenly tensioned without wrinkles or sagging, and all attachment points are secure. Verify that the seat adjustment mechanisms move freely and are not obstructed by the new foam or upholstery.

    Reinstall seat in vehicle
    Carefully position the seat assembly back into the vehicle, aligning the seat track mounting holes with the floor mounting points. If aftermarket wiring is present, reconnect any electrical harnesses before fully seating the assembly. Insert all four seat mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque each bolt to specification in a cross-pattern sequence. Note: Torque seat mounting bolts to the factory-specified value (verify in the 1992 Viper service manual) in a cross-pattern to ensure even loading on the seat frame.
