Seat - Rear

Removal and installation of the rear seat assembly in a 1992 Dodge Viper, including disconnecting seat belt anchors and mounting hardware.

Preparation

1. Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground with ignition off
2. Move front seats fully forward to provide working clearance
3. Visually inspect the rear seat area to identify all visible fasteners and mounting points

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove seat belt lower anchor bolts
   Locate the lower seat belt anchor bolt on each side of the rear seat area. These bolt through the floor pan near the seat base. Using a socket wrench, remove the 2 anchor bolts (one per side). Set the belt assemblies aside but do not allow them to retract fully into the pillar.

   Remove rear seat cushion mounting fasteners
   The rear seat cushion is secured by 2 mounting bolts at the front base of the cushion, accessible from the front face. Remove these bolts using an appropriate socket. Note the position of any washers or spacers for reinstallation.

   Lift and remove rear seat cushion
   With mounting bolts removed, grasp the front edge of the seat cushion and lift upward firmly. The cushion may have rear retention clips or hooks engaging slots in the rear bulkhead. Angle the cushion upward and forward to disengage, then remove from vehicle.

   Remove seat back mounting bolts
   With the cushion removed, access to the seat back lower mounting bolts is now available. Locate the 2-4 bolts securing the seat back frame to the body structure at the base of the backrest. Remove these bolts completely and retain hardware.

   Disconnect seat back upper fasteners (if equipped)
   Check for upper retention fasteners or clips where the seat back meets the rear bulkhead or package shelf area. If present, remove any additional bolts or release clips securing the top edge of the seat back to the body.

   Remove seat back assembly
   With all fasteners removed, carefully lift the seat back assembly upward and angle it to clear the mounting points and seat belt routing. Guide the assembly out of the vehicle, taking care not to damage surrounding trim or seat belt webbing.

   Install replacement seat back (if applicable)
   Position the new or refurbished seat back assembly into the vehicle, routing seat belt webbing correctly through any guides or slots. Align the lower mounting points with the body mounting holes. Start all mounting bolts by hand before final tightening.

   Install and torque seat back fasteners
   Torque the seat back lower mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench. If upper fasteners are present, install and torque them as well. Verify the seat back is firmly seated against the body structure with no gaps or misalignment.

   Install rear seat cushion
   Position the seat cushion into place, engaging any rear hooks or clips into their body slots first. Press down firmly on the cushion to ensure full engagement, then align the front mounting holes. Install the front cushion mounting bolts and torque to specification.

    Reinstall seat belt lower anchors
    Route the seat belt webbing correctly (not twisted) and position the lower anchor bolts through their mounting points. Install and torque the anchor bolts to specification. Verify seat belt webbing moves freely and retracts properly.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all seat belt webbing is routed correctly and not pinched or twisted
2. Verify all mounting bolts are torqued to specification and properly seated
3. Check that seat cushion and back are securely locked in place with no movement or rattles

Verification

• Apply firm downward and rearward pressure to the seat cushion to verify secure mounting
• Push and pull on the seat back to confirm rigid attachment with no looseness
• Test seat belt operation - belts should extend and retract smoothly without binding
• Visually inspect all mounting points to ensure no gaps between seat and body structure
