Seat Track

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the seat track assembly on a 1992 Dodge Viper, including disconnection of seat belt anchors and electrical connectors.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
3. Move the seat fully forward to access rear mounting bolts, then fully rearward to access front mounting bolts during the procedure
4. Remove any floor mats or debris from around the seat base

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect Seat Belt Anchor
   Locate the seat belt anchor bolt at the outboard lower corner of the seat. This is a single Torx bolt securing the belt to the seat frame. Remove the bolt using a T50 Torx driver and set aside the seat belt buckle assembly. The belt will remain attached to its upper anchor point on the roll structure behind the seat.

   Remove Trim Covers from Seat Track Area
   Inspect the inboard and outboard sides of the seat base for plastic trim covers over the track mounting bolts. On the 1992 Viper, check for small snap-fit covers at each mounting point. Carefully pry these covers off using a trim tool or flat blade, working from the front edge. Set covers aside for reinstallation.

   Locate and Remove Front Seat Mounting Bolts
   With the seat slid fully rearward, locate the two front seat mounting bolts. These bolts secure the seat track to the floor pan; verify head size (commonly 13mm–15mm) against the fasteners on the vehicle before selecting a socket. Remove both front mounting bolts completely and set aside. Do not reuse these bolts if threads show any damage.

   Locate and Remove Rear Seat Mounting Bolts
   Slide the seat fully forward on its tracks. Locate the two rear seat mounting bolts at the rear of each track. Remove both rear mounting bolts completely using a 15mm socket with extension. Support the seat to prevent it from tipping once all fasteners are removed.

   Lift Seat Assembly from Vehicle
   With all four mounting bolts removed and seat belt disconnected, carefully lift the entire seat assembly straight up and out of the vehicle. The seat and track assembly will come out as one unit. Place the seat on a clean work surface with the tracks facing up. Use caution as the seat weighs approximately 40-50 pounds.

   Remove Seat Track Fasteners from Seat Frame
   With the seat inverted or on its side, locate the fasteners securing the seat track to the seat frame. These are typically 4 bolts per track (8 total for both tracks). Remove all track-to-seat fasteners and note their locations. The exact fastener count and type should be verified against the seat being serviced.

   Separate Seat Track from Seat Frame
   With all fasteners removed, carefully separate the seat track assembly from the seat frame. Note the orientation of the tracks and any alignment pins or locating features. The tracks may have shims or spacers between the track and seat frame; keep these organized for reinstallation.

   Install New Seat Track to Seat Frame
   Position the new or serviced seat track assembly onto the seat frame, ensuring proper left/right orientation and that any alignment pins engage their holes. Install any shims or spacers in their original positions. Start all track-to-seat fasteners by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment.

   Tighten Track-to-Seat Fasteners
   Tighten all track-to-seat fasteners in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure. Tighten track-to-seat fasteners to the OEM specification (verify against the factory service manual for the 1992 Viper before applying a torque value). Verify the track slides smoothly through its full range of motion before reinstalling in the vehicle.

    Position Seat Assembly in Vehicle
    Carefully lower the complete seat and track assembly back into the vehicle, aligning the four track mounting holes with the threaded inserts in the floor pan. Ensure no wiring or carpeting is trapped beneath the tracks. Start all four seat mounting bolts by hand to verify alignment.

    Torque Seat Mounting Bolts
    Using a torque wrench, tighten all four seat mounting bolts to the OEM specification (verify against the factory service manual for the 1992 Viper) in a cross pattern (front left, rear right, front right, rear left). This ensures even seating of the tracks to the floor pan. Double-check that all bolts are tight and seated properly.
    ⚠️Seat mounting bolts MUST be torqued to specification. Under-torqued fasteners can allow seat movement in a collision.

    Reconnect Seat Belt Anchor
    Position the seat belt buckle assembly back onto the outboard lower seat frame anchor point. Install the T50 Torx bolt and tighten securely. Verify the seat belt retracts and extends smoothly and that the buckle latches properly.

    Reinstall Trim Covers
    Snap the plastic trim covers back over the seat mounting bolt locations. Ensure each cover is fully seated and flush with surrounding trim. Replace any damaged clips.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the negative battery cable
2. Test seat operation through full range of forward and aft travel, ensuring smooth movement with no binding or unusual noise
3. Verify seat belt buckle engages and releases properly
4. Check that all trim covers are secure and no fasteners or tools remain in the vehicle

Verification

• Slide the seat through its full range of motion in both directions, confirming smooth operation without binding or noise
• Firmly attempt to rock the seat side-to-side and front-to-back while seated to verify all mounting bolts are properly torqued
• Verify the seat belt buckle operates correctly and the anchor point is secure
• Confirm no rattles or loose components when the seat is moved
