Carpet

Complete removal and replacement of all carpet sections in the 1992 Dodge Viper, including removal of seats, center console, door sill trim, and kick panels to access carpet fasteners and allow full extraction.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and ensure transmission is in park (or 1st gear for manual).
2. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental airbag deployment or electrical shorts during seat removal.
3. Remove any floor mats, tools, or debris from interior.
4. Photograph seat belt anchor points and trim panel positions for reference during reassembly.
5. Allow interior to air out if carpet is damp - identify and repair any water intrusion points before proceeding.

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove driver and passenger seats
   Slide each seat fully rearward for access to front mounting bolts. Remove 4 mounting bolts per seat (2 front, 2 rear) securing seat tracks to floor pan. The 1992 Viper uses manual seats with no power seat motors or electrical connectors, so no wiring needs to be disconnected. Carefully lift seat out of vehicle - Viper seats are heavy and awkward to handle alone. Set seats aside on protected surface to avoid damage to upholstery. Note: Socket set (metric and SAE)

   Remove center console
   Remove the shift boot by pulling upward to release from console. Locate and remove console mounting fasteners - check around perimeter of console base, near shifter opening, and at rear of console tunnel. The 1992 Viper console is secured with multiple screws; inspect carefully for all fasteners before attempting removal. Disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or lights. Lift console assembly up and rearward to clear shifter, then remove from vehicle.

   Remove door sill plates
   Starting at one end of each door sill plate, carefully pry upward using trim removal tool to disengage clips. The sill plates run along both driver and passenger door openings and are typically held by 4-6 clips per side. Work progressively along the length rather than forcing from one point. Remove both driver and passenger side sill plates completely to expose carpet edges.

   Remove kick panels and lower trim
   Remove kick panels on both driver and passenger sides by carefully prying away from firewall - these cover the front footwell areas and are clip-retained. Check for any screws at top or bottom edges before prying. Remove any lower A-pillar trim pieces that overlap carpet edges. The Viper's minimal interior design means fewer trim pieces than typical vehicles, but all carpet edges must be freed before removal.

   Disconnect and remove pedal cluster (driver side)
   To fully remove driver side carpet, the pedal cluster must be detached. Disconnect brake light switch connector at brake pedal. Remove the 3-4 nuts securing the pedal cluster bracket to the firewall/bulkhead. Carefully pull pedal assembly away from firewall enough to allow carpet to slide underneath - complete removal is not necessary, just clearance. Support pedals to prevent stress on brake line or throttle cable connections.

   Remove seat belt lower anchor trim covers
   Locate the plastic trim covers over the seat belt lower anchor points (where belt latches mount to floor/transmission tunnel). These covers snap over the anchor bolts and must be removed to free carpet sections. Pry carefully to release snap-on covers, or if threaded covers are used, remove them by hand after confirming thread direction. Note that seat belt anchors themselves remain attached to body structure - only the cosmetic covers are removed.

   Locate and remove carpet fasteners
   Inspect all exposed areas where carpet meets body panels, transmission tunnel, and firewall. Look for plastic push-pin fasteners, screws, or clips securing carpet to sound deadening pads or floor pan. Common locations include: along transmission tunnel edges, at front firewall toe board area, under where console was mounted, and at rear bulkhead behind seats. Remove all fasteners while noting their locations for reinstallation. The Viper uses approximately 8-12 fasteners total, but inspect thoroughly rather than assuming count.

   Extract front carpet section
   Starting from one side, carefully pull carpet away from floor pan. Work around pedal cluster opening on driver side and feed carpet out from under the suspended pedal assembly. The front carpet section extends from firewall to approximately the seat mounting area. Check for any remaining fasteners or clips if carpet does not release easily - forcing will tear the material or backing. Remove front section completely from vehicle.

   Extract rear carpet section
   Remove the rear carpet section which covers the area behind the seats to the rear bulkhead. This section may be separate from the front or may be one continuous piece depending on carpet set design. If separate, pull rearward and up to clear any remaining clips at transmission tunnel or side sills. The Viper's minimal rear cabin space makes this section smaller than typical vehicles.

    Clean and inspect floor pan
    With all carpet removed, vacuum floor pan thoroughly to remove dirt, debris, and old sound deadening material fragments. Inspect for rust, damage, or water intrusion evidence. Check all drain tube outlets (if accessible) and weatherstrip seals. If rust is present, address corrosion before carpet installation. Inspect sound deadening pads - replace if deteriorated or water-damaged. This is the only opportunity to address floor pan condition without repeating full carpet removal.

    Install new rear carpet section
    Begin installation with rear carpet section. Position carpet in rear cabin area, ensuring proper alignment with transmission tunnel sides and rear bulkhead. The carpet should lay flat without bunching or stretching. Align any pre-cut holes for seat belt anchors or fastener locations. Secure with original fasteners at transmission tunnel and rear mounting points.

    Install new front carpet section
    Position front carpet section starting at firewall toe board area. Feed carpet under pedal cluster assembly on driver side, ensuring throttle pedal and brake pedal openings align correctly. Work carpet around transmission tunnel, verifying proper fit at both driver and passenger footwells. The carpet should extend to seat mounting area and overlap or join with rear section per original configuration. Install all carpet fasteners along tunnel, firewall, and perimeter - do not overtighten plastic fasteners as they may strip or crack.

    Reinstall pedal cluster and seat belt covers
    Reposition pedal cluster bracket to firewall/bulkhead and secure with original nuts. Reconnect brake light switch connector and verify brake pedal returns properly. Reinstall seat belt lower anchor trim covers by snapping into place over anchor bolts. Verify covers are fully seated and carpet edges are tucked properly beneath them.

    Reinstall kick panels and door sill plates
    Reinstall kick panels on both sides, pressing firmly to engage clips. Ensure panels sit flush and carpet edges are not pinched or visible. Install door sill plates by aligning clip positions and pressing down firmly along entire length until all clips engage. Replace any damaged clips with new units from parts inventory.

    Reinstall center console
    Position console assembly over transmission tunnel and lower into place, feeding shifter through opening. Reconnect any electrical connectors. Install all console mounting screws around perimeter and at rear of tunnel. Reinstall shift boot by pressing into console opening until seated. Verify console is secure with no movement or rattles.

    Reinstall seats
    Carefully position each seat over mounting holes in floor pan, aligning front and rear seat track bolt holes. Thread in all 4 mounting bolts per seat finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Torque all seat mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern (front left, rear right, front right, rear left). Reconnect any electrical connectors. Slide seats forward and rearward to verify smooth operation and secure mounting. Note: Verify all seat mounting bolts are torqued to the factory specification per the 1992 Viper service manual (confirm exact value before final torque) - this is safety critical and must not be skipped.

    Reconnect battery and final verification
    Reconnect negative battery cable. Verify all trim panels are secure and carpet edges are properly tucked under sill plates and trim. Check that no tools or fasteners were left in vehicle. Test seat belt operation to ensure proper routing over new carpet and that latches engage securely.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall components in reverse order of removal, starting with rear carpet section, then front section, followed by trim panels and seats.
2. Verify all seat mounting bolts are torqued to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) specification - this is safety critical and must not be skipped.
3. Replace any damaged or broken trim clips rather than reusing compromised fasteners.
4. Ensure carpet edges are properly tucked under all trim pieces to prevent fraying and maintain finished appearance.

Verification

• Confirm all seats are rigidly mounted with no movement when pulled upward or rocked side-to-side.
• Verify all trim panels are flush and fully clipped with no gaps or loose edges.
• Check that carpet lies flat in all areas with no bunching under seats or at pedals.
• Test seat belt latching operation and ensure smooth pedal movement without carpet interference.
• Verify door sill plates are secure and do not lift when stepped on during entry/exit.
