Ignition Lock Cylinder

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the ignition lock cylinder on a 2005 Dodge Viper, including steering column cover removal and lock cylinder release.

• Ignition lock cylinder × 1 — Mopar 5093254AA or equivalent
• Ignition lock cylinder retaining pin (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge.
3. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and leave it there throughout the procedure.
4. Ensure you have the existing key or the ignition is in the ACC position to release the lock cylinder.

Procedure

   Remove Lower Steering Column Cover
   Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering column. Remove the Torx screws securing the lower cover (typically 2 screws at the bottom). Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside.

   Remove Upper Steering Column Cover
   Locate the upper steering column cover. Remove the Torx screws securing the upper cover to the column. The upper and lower covers typically separate at a horizontal seam. Once fasteners are removed, lift the upper cover up and away from the steering column. Note the position of any wiring clips or harness routing.

   Locate Ignition Lock Cylinder Release
   With the steering column covers removed, locate the ignition lock cylinder housing on the right side of the steering column. Identify the small access hole or slot for the lock cylinder release pin, typically located near the bottom of the cylinder housing.

   Position Key and Release Lock Cylinder
   Insert the ignition key and turn it to the ACC (Accessory) position. Using a small flathead screwdriver or pin punch, press the release pin through the access hole while simultaneously pulling the key and lock cylinder straight out of the housing. Apply steady pressure on the release pin until the cylinder begins to move. Remove the lock cylinder completely from the housing.

   Inspect Lock Cylinder Housing
   Inspect the lock cylinder housing for any debris, damage, or worn components. Check that the release mechanism moves freely. Clean the housing bore with a lint-free cloth if necessary. Verify that the retaining pin mechanism is intact and not damaged.

   Prepare New Lock Cylinder
   If installing a new lock cylinder, ensure it comes with a new key set. Verify that the new cylinder's retaining pin is properly positioned and that the cylinder rotates smoothly through all positions (LOCK, ACC, ON, START). Insert the key into the new cylinder and turn it to the ACC position to depress the retaining pin for installation.

   Install New Lock Cylinder
   With the key in the ACC position in the new lock cylinder, align the cylinder with the housing and insert it straight into the column. Push firmly until you hear or feel the retaining pin click into place. The cylinder should be fully seated and flush with the housing. Remove the key and verify the cylinder is retained and cannot be pulled out.

   Test Lock Cylinder Operation
   Insert the key and test all ignition positions: LOCK, ACC, ON, and START (without cranking the engine since battery is disconnected). Verify smooth rotation through all positions and that the key can be removed only in the LOCK position. Check that the steering wheel lock engages in the LOCK position.

   Reinstall Upper Steering Column Cover
   Position the upper steering column cover back onto the column, ensuring any wiring harnesses are routed properly and not pinched. Align the cover with the mounting points and reinstall the Torx screws. Tighten screws evenly but do not overtighten plastic components.

    Reinstall Lower Steering Column Cover
    Position the lower steering column cover back onto the column, ensuring it aligns properly with the upper cover at the seam. Install the Torx screws and tighten to specification. Verify the covers are securely attached and gaps are even.

    Reconnect Battery and Test
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Insert the key and test the ignition through all positions with the engine off, then start the engine to verify full functionality. Check that all electrical accessories (radio, HVAC, etc.) function properly through the ignition positions. Verify the steering lock engages and disengages correctly.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly follows the reverse order of disassembly.
2. Ensure all Torx fasteners are tightened to the specified torque for cover screws.
3. Verify steering column covers are properly seated with even gaps before final tightening.
4. Do not overtighten plastic cover fasteners as this can cause cracking.

Verification

• Test the ignition lock cylinder through all positions (LOCK, ACC, ON, START) and verify smooth operation.
• Confirm the key can only be removed in the LOCK position.
• Verify the steering wheel lock engages when the key is turned to LOCK and removed.
• Start the engine and verify normal operation of all ignition-controlled systems.
• Check that steering column covers are securely fastened with no rattles or loose panels.
