Seat Belt

This procedure covers the removal and installation of seat belt assemblies (retractor, buckle, and anchor points) for the 2005 Dodge Viper, including access to mounting hardware through trim removal.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes to deplete any airbag system capacitance if seat-mounted pretensioners are present
3. Identify which seat belt assembly requires replacement (driver, passenger, or lap belt configuration)
4. Photograph seat belt routing and anchor point locations before disassembly for reference during installation

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower B-pillar trim cover
   Locate the lower B-pillar trim panel that covers the seat belt retractor mechanism on the affected side. On the Viper, this panel is typically secured with trim clips along the edges. Carefully insert a trim removal tool at the clip locations and pry the panel away from the body structure. Work around the perimeter to release all clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for door lighting or switches if present on this panel section.

   Remove upper B-pillar trim cover
   With the lower section removed, locate the rear bulkhead/roll-hoop trim that houses the seat belt guide and upper routing behind the seat. This panel typically has 2-3 clips securing it to the pillar structure. Release the clips using a trim tool and carefully pull the panel away. The seat belt webbing will pass through this trim - do not remove the panel completely yet, just free it from its mounting points.

   Remove seat belt upper anchor bolt
   Slide the upper B-pillar trim up and away from the seat belt upper anchor point. Locate the upper seat belt anchor bolt on the rear bulkhead/roll-hoop structure behind the seat. This is typically a high-strength bolt with a large washer. Use the appropriate socket to remove the anchor bolt completely. Support the seat belt assembly to prevent it from falling.

   Remove seat belt buckle anchor
   Locate the seat belt buckle (receptacle) anchor point between or beside the seat mounting area. This is typically bolted to the seat frame or floor tunnel; confirm the exact anchor location and bolt configuration against factory documentation before removal. Remove the anchor bolt and withdraw the buckle assembly. Note the orientation of any washers or spacers.

   Access seat belt retractor mechanism
   With the trim removed, locate the seat belt retractor assembly mounted to the rear bulkhead structure behind the seat. The retractor is typically secured with 2-3 bolts to a reinforced mounting bracket. Identify all retractor mounting bolts - they will be accessible from the interior side of the pillar structure.

   Disconnect seat belt pretensioner connector (if equipped)
   The 2005 Viper seat belts generally do NOT include pyrotechnic pretensioners; verify against factory documentation. If a pretensioner connector is present, locate the electrical connector at the base of the retractor. Disconnect the connector by releasing the locking tab. Handle with care as this is a pyrotechnic device.
   ⚠️Pretensioner-equipped seat belts contain explosive charges. Never strike, probe, or apply heat to the retractor mechanism. Dispose of old pretensioner assemblies according to manufacturer and local hazardous material regulations.

   Remove seat belt retractor assembly
   Remove the retractor mounting bolt(s) securing the retractor to the rear bulkhead structure. Verify exact bolt count against factory documentation before proceeding. Support the retractor as you remove the final bolt. Carefully guide the seat belt webbing through the B-pillar trim slot and upper guide loop, then withdraw the entire assembly from the vehicle. Keep tension on the webbing to control retraction.

   Inspect mounting points and structure
   With the seat belt removed, inspect all mounting points for damage, cracks, or deformation in the sheet metal. Check mounting bolt threads in the body structure for stripping or damage. The B-pillar reinforcement must be structurally sound. Inspect the webbing guide slots in trim panels for sharp edges or damage that could fray the new belt webbing.

   Position new seat belt retractor
   Route the new seat belt webbing through the upper B-pillar trim guide loop first, ensuring the webbing is not twisted. Position the retractor mechanism in its mounting location on the lower B-pillar structure, aligning the bolt holes with the reinforcement brackets. Ensure any spacers or washers are in their original positions.

    Install retractor mounting bolts
    Install the retractor mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque the mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern if multiple bolts are present. Verify the retractor mechanism can move freely and is not binding against the pillar structure.

    Connect pretensioner connector (if equipped)
    If the new seat belt assembly is equipped with a pretensioner, connect the electrical connector to the vehicle harness. Ensure the connector locks fully with an audible click. Verify the connector is secured and not at risk of being pinched by trim panels.

    Install seat belt buckle anchor
    Position the seat belt buckle at its anchor point between or beside the seat. Ensure the buckle orientation matches the original configuration (release button facing correct direction for operation). Install the anchor bolt with any spacers or washers in their original positions and torque to specification.

    Install seat belt upper anchor
    Route the seat belt webbing to the upper anchor point at the top of the B-pillar, ensuring the webbing follows the exact path of the original belt with no twists. Install the upper anchor bolt with its large washer and torque to specification. Verify the webbing moves smoothly through all guide points.

    Reinstall B-pillar trim panels
    Position the upper B-pillar trim panel over the seat belt webbing and press firmly to engage the retaining clips at all mounting points. Ensure the webbing moves freely through the trim guide slot. Install the lower B-pillar trim panel, engaging all clips around the perimeter. Reconnect any electrical connectors for lights or switches. Verify all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps.

    Reconnect battery and clear codes
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. If the vehicle is equipped with any pyrotechnic seat belt or airbag components (verify — the Viper typically has minimal such systems), start the vehicle and verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after the system self-check completes. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes related to the seat belt system if necessary using appropriate scan tool.

Reassembly

1. Trim panels must be fully seated with all clips engaged - check for gaps or loose sections
2. Seat belt webbing must have zero twists along entire length from retractor to upper anchor
3. All mounting bolts are safety-critical and must be torqued to exact specifications - do not reuse damaged or stretched fasteners

Verification

• Pull seat belt webbing out fully and allow it to retract smoothly - the retractor should lock when pulled sharply
• Test seat belt buckle latching and release operation - buckle should click firmly and release button should operate smoothly
• With seat belt fastened, pull firmly on webbing to verify all anchor points are secure with no movement or noise
• Verify airbag warning light extinguishes after vehicle startup if pretensioner-equipped seat belts were installed
• Check that seat belt webbing does not bind or rub on any trim edges during extension and retraction
• Confirm seat belt geometry matches original installation - webbing should cross occupant at correct shoulder height and lap position
