Seat Foam

Replacement of driver or passenger seat foam cushion, requiring removal of seat from vehicle and disassembly of seat cover to access foam padding.

• Hog rings × 20 — Generic seat upholstery hog rings
• Seat cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
3. Move seat to full forward position to access rear mounting bolts
4. Prepare clean work area with protective covering for seat disassembly

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect seat electrical connectors
   Locate electrical connector(s) under the seat. Press release tab and disconnect harness connector(s) for seat position sensor and seat-mounted airbag (if equipped). Note routing of wiring harness for reinstallation.

   Remove rear seat mounting bolts
   With seat in full forward position, remove the 2 rear seat mounting bolts securing seat track to floor pan. These are safety-critical fasteners located at the rear of each seat track rail.

   Seat Mounting Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)

   Remove front seat mounting bolts
   Slide seat to full rearward position. Remove the 2 front seat mounting bolts securing seat track to floor pan at the front of each seat track rail.

   Remove seat assembly from vehicle
   Carefully lift and tilt seat assembly to clear door sill and interior trim. Remove seat from vehicle and place on protected work surface. Ensure wiring harness is completely free and not snagged on any interior components.
   ⚠Seat assembly is heavy (approximately 40-50 lbs). Use proper lifting technique or have assistant help to avoid injury or damage to door sill trim.

   Remove seat back plastic trim panels
   With seat on work surface, remove any plastic trim covers or access panels from seat back. These typically snap into place with plastic clips. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry panels away from seat frame without breaking clips.

   Detach seat cover from seat back frame
   Locate hog rings securing seat cover to seat back frame along perimeter and tension points. Use hog ring pliers or wire cutters to remove hog rings. Count and note approximate hog ring locations for reassembly reference. Work systematically around seat back perimeter.

   Detach seat cover from seat bottom frame
   Flip seat assembly to access underside of seat bottom. Remove hog rings securing seat cover to bottom frame pan. Some areas may use J-clips or listing wires instead of hog rings. Remove all fasteners securing cover to frame, noting their locations and types.

   Remove seat cover and extract old foam
   Carefully pull seat cover away from foam padding. The cover may have integrated bolsters or support structures. Once cover is free, remove old seat foam from seat frame. Note orientation and positioning of foam pieces, as seat may have separate bottom cushion and back cushion foam components.

   Clean seat frame and inspect components
   Use shop vacuum to remove debris from seat frame channels and mounting surfaces. Inspect seat frame for damage, broken springs, or worn suspension components. Check condition of lumbar support mechanism if equipped. Replace any damaged components before installing new foam.

    Install new seat foam
    Position new seat foam onto seat frame in correct orientation. Ensure foam is properly seated in frame channels and aligned with all mounting features. Verify foam contours match seat cover design before proceeding with cover installation.

    Reinstall seat cover over new foam
    Starting at one corner, pull seat cover over new foam padding. Work systematically to ensure even distribution and proper alignment of cover seams with foam contours. Ensure no wrinkles or bunching occurs. Verify all integrated bolsters and support features align correctly with foam.

    Secure seat cover to frame with hog rings
    Using hog ring pliers, install new hog rings to secure seat cover to seat frame at all original attachment points. Pull cover taut to ensure proper tension without over-stretching material. Work from center outward on each section to maintain even tension. Install hog rings at seat back perimeter, bottom frame pan, and all tension points noted during disassembly.

    Reinstall seat trim panels
    Reinstall plastic trim covers and access panels to seat back. Ensure all clips are properly engaged and panels are flush with seat surface. Replace any broken clips as needed.

    Reinstall seat assembly in vehicle
    With assistance if needed, carefully lift seat assembly and position over floor mounting points. Guide seat tracks onto floor mounting studs or into mounting holes. Ensure wiring harness routes properly and is not pinched between seat and floor.
    ⚠Do not allow seat to drop or impact floor pan. Control seat weight during positioning to prevent damage to mounting points.

    Install and torque seat mounting bolts
    Install front seat mounting bolts finger-tight, then install rear mounting bolts finger-tight. Torque all 4 seat mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern (front left, rear right, front right, rear left) to ensure even seating of seat tracks to floor pan.
    ⚠️Seat mounting bolts are safety-critical fasteners. Verify correct torque specification is applied. Do not reuse damaged or corroded bolts.

    Reconnect electrical connectors
    Reconnect seat electrical harness connector(s) under seat. Ensure connectors are fully seated with audible click. Route wiring harness away from seat track movement path.

    Reconnect battery and verify operation
    Reconnect battery negative terminal. Test seat sliding operation through full range of motion to verify no interference or binding. Verify manual seat adjustment functions operate correctly. Clear any airbag system fault codes if applicable using appropriate scan tool.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall seat cover in reverse order of removal, ensuring proper tension and alignment
2. Torque all seat mounting bolts to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) in cross pattern
3. Verify all electrical connections are secure before reconnecting battery

Verification

• Verify seat is securely mounted with no movement at mounting points when pulled upward
• Test seat sliding operation through full range of motion with no binding or interference
• Check seat cover is properly tensioned with no wrinkles or loose areas
• Verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after battery reconnection
• Confirm all electrical seat functions operate correctly if equipped with power adjustments
