Carpet

Complete removal and replacement of the carpet in a 2005 Dodge Viper, including removal of seats, center console, door sills, and kick panels to access carpet sections.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
3. Remove any floor mats and personal items from interior
4. Document or photograph seat electrical connector positions before disconnection
5. Inspect carpet condition and identify any areas requiring additional attention (rust, moisture damage)

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove driver and passenger seats
   Slide each seat fully rearward to access front mounting bolts. Remove the seat mounting bolts per seat (typically located at the front and rear of each seat rail — verify count and location against the factory service manual) using a socket. Disconnect any electrical connectors at the seat base (for seat belt tensioners, sensors, or heated seats if equipped) by pressing release tabs. Note that base Viper seats are manual, so power-seat connectors may not be present. Tilt seat backward and carefully lift from vehicle. Repeat for passenger seat. Note that seat belt buckle receptacles are mounted to seat frames on the Viper and will come out with seats.

   Remove center console assembly
   Remove the shift knob by turning counterclockwise (manual transmission). Locate and remove console mounting fasteners: start at the rear near the transmission tunnel, then work forward toward the dashboard. The console is secured with a combination of Torx screws and push clips along its perimeter. Disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or switches. Lift console assembly up and rearward to clear the shift lever and parking brake handle (verify parking brake type and location for this vehicle).

   Remove door sill trim panels
   Starting at one end, use trim panel removal tool to carefully pry up door sill trim panels on both driver and passenger sides. These are typically secured with push clips that snap into the floor pan. Work along the length of each sill, releasing clips progressively. Disconnect any courtesy light connectors if equipped. The sill plates extend from the front kick panel area to the rear bulkhead.

   Remove front kick panels and side trim
   Remove kick panel trim on both sides of the vehicle. These panels are secured with a combination of push clips and Torx screws. Start by locating visible fasteners near the bottom edge and door jamb area, then gently pull panels away from the body. The kick panels overlap the carpet edges and must be fully removed for carpet extraction. Note the routing of any wiring harnesses behind panels.

   Disconnect under-dash harnesses and components
   Identify and disconnect any harness connectors, ground straps, or components that pass through or are secured to the carpet. Common items include: parking brake cable routing clips, HVAC ductwork fasteners at floor level, and any body control module or relay mounting brackets attached to the transmission tunnel. On the Viper, check for underdash bracing or crossmembers that may have carpet routed around them.

   Remove carpet retaining fasteners
   Locate and remove all fasteners securing carpet to floor pan. These include Torx screws or push clips typically found: along the transmission tunnel sides, at the firewall base, near door sill mounting areas, and along the rear bulkhead. The Viper carpet sections are secured at multiple points to prevent movement. Work systematically from front to rear on each side, collecting all fasteners for reinstallation.

   Remove driver side carpet section
   Starting with the driver side, carefully peel back the carpet section from the firewall area, working rearward. The carpet may be adhered with sound deadening material or factory adhesive in spots. Gently pull the carpet up and around the pedal assembly area - note that the carpet is cut to fit around pedal mounting brackets. Fold and remove the driver side section, noting how it overlaps with the center tunnel section. Check for any remaining clips or fasteners before forcing removal.

   Remove passenger side carpet section
   Repeat the removal process for the passenger side carpet section. This section typically extends from the firewall to the rear bulkhead. Note how it interfaces with the center tunnel carpet and any overlap areas. The passenger side may have additional cutouts or routing paths for HVAC components or wiring harnesses. Carefully work the carpet free from any adhesive or sound deadening material.

   Remove center tunnel carpet section
   Remove the center tunnel carpet section last, as it typically overlaps both side sections. This piece wraps over and around the transmission tunnel. Work it free from the tunnel sides, checking for any remaining fasteners or clips. The tunnel section may extend from the firewall area back to the rear bulkhead and is often the most contoured piece due to the transmission tunnel shape.

    Clean and inspect floor pan
    With all carpet sections removed, thoroughly vacuum and clean the exposed floor pan. Inspect for rust, corrosion, moisture damage, or holes. Check drain plug seals if equipped. Inspect sound deadening material and replace if deteriorated. Verify all mounting clips and fastener locations are intact. Address any rust or damage before installing new carpet. Check that all wiring harnesses and brake lines under carpet are secure and undamaged.

    Install center tunnel carpet section
    Begin installation with the center tunnel section. Position it over the transmission tunnel, ensuring proper alignment with cutouts and contours. The tunnel section should fit snugly around the tunnel sides. Secure with retaining clips or fasteners at the firewall base and along the tunnel edges where accessible. Do not fully tighten fasteners yet - allow for adjustment as side sections are installed.

    Install driver and passenger carpet sections
    Install driver side carpet section first, working it into position around the pedal assembly area and aligning with the center tunnel section overlap. Ensure proper fit at firewall and door sill areas. Repeat for passenger side section. Position both sections so they properly overlap with the center tunnel carpet at the designated seam areas. Work out any wrinkles or bunching. Install retaining fasteners and clips along door sills, firewall base, and rear bulkhead areas. Torque any screws to specification.

    Reinstall kick panels and door sills
    Reinstall front kick panels on both sides, ensuring carpet edges are properly tucked beneath panel edges. Secure with original or replacement Torx screws and push clips. Reconnect any courtesy light connectors. Install door sill trim panels by aligning clips with floor pan holes and pressing firmly until clips engage. Verify all clips are fully seated and panels sit flush.

    Reinstall center console
    Route console assembly over shift lever and emergency brake handle. Reconnect electrical connectors for power outlets or switches. Align console with mounting points and secure with original Torx screws and push clips. Ensure console sits flush against carpet and tunnel surfaces. Reinstall shift knob by threading clockwise until snug.

    Reinstall seats
    Position driver seat into vehicle, ensuring carpet is not pinched under seat rails. Align seat mounting holes with floor pan threaded inserts. Reconnect electrical connectors for power seats and occupant sensors. Install and hand-tighten all 4 mounting bolts, then torque to specification in a cross pattern. Verify seat slides and reclines normally and does not bind on carpet. Repeat process for passenger seat. Note: Seat mounting bolts are safety-critical fasteners. Torque to the exact specification listed in the factory service manual for this vehicle using a calibrated torque wrench. Verify all mounting bolts per seat are fully torqued.

    Reconnect battery and verify systems
    Reconnect battery negative terminal. Check operation of all electrical components that were disconnected: power seats, occupant sensors, courtesy lights, and any console-mounted switches. If the vehicle is equipped with airbags, verify airbag warning light behavior follows normal sequence (illuminates briefly at key-on, then extinguishes). Test seat belt buckles and ensure proper engagement. Check that all trim panels are secure and carpet lays flat without bunching.

Reassembly

1. Install carpet sections in reverse order of removal: center tunnel first, then driver and passenger side sections
2. Ensure all carpet edges are properly tucked under trim panels and kick panels to prevent interference with pedals or controls
3. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before reinstalling seats and console
4. Double-check that no wiring harnesses or brake lines are pinched under new carpet
5. Torque all seat mounting bolts to exact specification - these are safety-critical fasteners

Verification

• Check that carpet lays flat throughout interior with no wrinkles, bunching, or interference with pedals
• Verify all trim panels and door sills are flush and properly secured
• Test seat adjustment functions (slide, recline) to ensure carpet does not interfere with seat mechanisms
• Confirm airbag warning light extinguishes after key-on self-test, indicating proper sensor reconnection
• Verify parking brake operates smoothly without binding on carpet
• Check that shift lever moves freely through all gears without carpet interference
• Inspect door sill areas for proper carpet tucking when doors are opened and closed
