Climate Control Module

This procedure removes and replaces the climate control module (HVAC controller) on a 2005 Dodge Viper, located in the center instrument panel.

• Climate control module × 1 — OEM# 55111422AA or equivalent
• Panel clips (if damaged during removal) × 1 — Mopar standard push-pin clips

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
3. Allow interior to reach comfortable working temperature if vehicle has been in extreme heat or cold
4. Photograph the existing climate control connections and wiring orientation for reference during reinstallation

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center console trim bezel
   Locate the center console trim bezel surrounding the climate control module and shifter. Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry the bezel starting at the lower edges near the shifter boot. Work around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. There are typically 6-8 clips holding this bezel in place. Gently pull the bezel forward once all clips are released. Note: Verify correct Mopar HVAC control head part number against 2005 Viper (ZB) service parts catalog before ordering

   Disconnect bezel electrical connections
   With the bezel pulled forward, locate the electrical connectors on the back side for the hazard switch, traction control switch (if equipped), and any other integrated switches. Press the locking tabs and disconnect each connector. Remove the bezel completely and set aside in a safe location.

   Remove climate control mounting fasteners
   Locate the screws securing the climate control module to the instrument panel mounting bracket. Verify the exact count, fastener type, and size against the service manual before removal. Remove all fasteners and place them in a magnetic tray for safekeeping.

   Extract climate control module
   Carefully pull the climate control module forward from the instrument panel opening. You may need to work it side-to-side gently to clear the mounting bracket. Pull it out far enough to access the rear electrical connections and control cables.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the main electrical connector(s) on the rear of the climate control module. There is typically one large multi-pin connector. Press the locking tab or squeeze the release mechanism and disconnect the connector. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.

   Disconnect vacuum harness (if equipped)
   The 2005 Viper climate control typically uses electric actuators rather than vacuum control, so a vacuum harness may not be present. If no vacuum harness is found on the module, skip this step and proceed to disconnecting any remaining electrical connectors.

   Remove control cables
   If the module uses mechanical temperature or mode control cables, identify them at the back of the module, squeeze or pry the plastic retaining clip to release it, then unhook the cable end from the lever. Note that many 2005 Viper systems are fully electronic and may have no control cables — in that case skip this step.

   Remove old climate control module
   With all connections disconnected, remove the climate control module completely from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting bracket and instrument panel opening for any damage or debris. Clean the mounting area if necessary before installing the replacement module.

   Prepare new climate control module
   Unpack the replacement climate control module and verify it matches the removed unit in connector configuration and control layout. Transfer any necessary components from the old module if the replacement is a bare unit (such as control knobs or faceplates if they are separate components).

    Connect control cables to new module
    Position the new climate control module near the instrument panel opening. Attach each control cable to its corresponding lever arm on the new module, matching the orientation documented during removal. Secure each cable with its retaining clip. Verify the cables move freely and are not kinked or binding.

    Connect vacuum harness and electrical connectors
    Push the vacuum harness connector firmly onto the module vacuum ports until it seats completely. Connect the main electrical connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Tug gently on each connection to verify it is secure.

    Install climate control module into instrument panel
    Carefully guide the climate control module into the instrument panel opening, ensuring all wiring and cables route properly behind it without pinching. Align the module with the mounting bracket holes. Install the mounting screws and tighten to the value specified in the service manual (typically low torque for small trim/module fasteners).

    Reconnect bezel electrical connections
    Position the center console trim bezel near the instrument panel. Connect all electrical connectors for switches integrated into the bezel (hazard, traction control, etc.). Ensure each connector locks securely.

    Install center console trim bezel
    Align the trim bezel with the instrument panel opening, ensuring all clips are positioned correctly. Starting from one side, press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Work methodically around the bezel until all clips are engaged and the bezel is flush with the surrounding trim.

    Reconnect battery and test system
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off). Test all climate control functions: fan speed settings, temperature control through full range, mode selection (defrost, vent, floor, etc.), and A/C engagement. Listen for blend door movement and verify airflow direction changes with mode selection. If any functions do not operate correctly, verify all cable and electrical connections are secure.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly follows the reverse order of disassembly
2. Ensure all trim panel clips are properly aligned before pressing bezel into place to avoid breaking clips
3. Verify control cable routing matches the original configuration to prevent binding or improper operation
4. If the replacement module is new from the dealer, it may require initialization through the vehicle's self-test procedure (consult service manual for specific key sequence)

Verification

• Verify all fan speeds operate correctly from lowest to highest setting
• Confirm temperature control adjusts from full cold to full hot smoothly
• Test all mode selections (defrost, floor, vent, bi-level) and verify airflow comes from correct vents
• Engage A/C and verify compressor clutch engages (listen for click and RPM change)
• Check that recirculation mode operates if equipped
• Verify all trim panels and bezels are secure with no gaps or rattles
• Confirm no warning lights or fault codes are present related to HVAC system
