Dash Pad

Complete removal and replacement of the dashboard pad (instrument panel cover) on a 2005 Dodge Viper, requiring removal of windshield pillar trim, instrument cluster bezel, and associated components.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
3. Allow interior to cool to ambient temperature if vehicle has been in sun
4. Prepare clean work area adjacent to vehicle for storing removed dashboard pad
5. Take reference photos of dashboard assembly from multiple angles before beginning disassembly

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove A-pillar trim panels
   Starting at the upper corner near the windshield header, carefully pull the A-pillar trim panel away from the body on both driver and passenger sides. These are retained by push clips along their length. Work from top to bottom, releasing each clip sequentially. Note the location of any weather seals that may need to be peeled back first.

   Remove instrument cluster bezel
   Remove the T20 Torx screws securing the instrument cluster bezel (typically 4 screws located at the corners behind the steering wheel). Gently pull the bezel away from the dashboard, releasing any remaining retaining clips. Disconnect any warning lamp sockets or electrical connections at the back of the bezel if equipped. Set bezel aside in protected area.

   Remove center console upper trim and radio bezel
   Remove the center stack trim panel surrounding the radio and climate controls. Remove T20 Torx screws securing the bezel (located at bottom edge and sides). Carefully pull trim forward to release upper clips. Disconnect climate control electrical connectors and any antenna connections. Note connector orientations before removal.

   Remove defroster grille panels
   The defroster grilles along the top of the dashboard are retained by clips and screws. Remove T15 Torx screws from each grille section (check both visible screws and any hidden under grille slots). Lift grilles upward and forward to release retaining clips. There are typically separate driver side, center, and passenger side sections.

   Remove passenger airbag module access
   From the glove box area, locate and remove any access panels or screws providing access to the passenger airbag mounting. This may require removing any lower dash access panel or knee bolster by removing the mounting screws to reach the passenger airbag mounting area. If the vehicle is equipped with a passenger airbag module, identify its mounting fasteners but do NOT remove the airbag module at this time unless specifically replacing it. Verify airbag configuration for this specific VIN before proceeding.

   Disconnect dashboard electrical connections
   Working methodically from one side to the other, disconnect all electrical connectors that attach to components mounted in or on the dashboard pad. This includes: airbag connectors (yellow), HVAC sensor connectors, any ambient temperature sensors in the dash face, radio antenna lead, and any lighting connectors. Mark each connection with tape indicating its location.

   Remove dashboard pad mounting fasteners at windshield
   With defroster grilles removed, locate and remove all dashboard pad mounting screws along the top edge near the windshield. These are typically T20 or T25 Torx screws spaced along the length of the dashboard. Remove approximately 8-10 screws along this upper edge. Keep fasteners organized by location.

   Remove dashboard pad side mounting fasteners
   At each end of the dashboard (driver and passenger sides), locate and remove the mounting fasteners securing the dash pad to the cowl and door opening structure. These are accessed through the areas exposed by removing the A-pillar trim. Remove T25 Torx screws or bolts on each side (typically 3-4 per side).

   Remove center and lower dashboard mounting points
   Remove any remaining dashboard pad mounting fasteners along the center section and lower edge. Check behind the instrument cluster opening for center support screws. Check the area above the steering column for mounting points. Remove all T20 or T25 Torx fasteners found in these locations.

    Lift and remove dashboard pad assembly
    With all fasteners removed and electrical connections disconnected, carefully lift the dashboard pad assembly upward and rearward. The pad is large and may require two people to maneuver safely. Watch for any remaining clips or connections that may have been missed. Tilt the assembly as needed to clear the steering column and extract through the passenger door opening. Place on padded surface to prevent damage.

    Inspect mounting points and prepare for installation
    With the old dash pad removed, inspect all mounting bosses and threaded inserts in the dashboard structure for damage. Clean any debris from screw holes. Inspect the new or replacement dashboard pad for proper fit of all mounting holes and electrical pass-throughs. Replace any damaged trim clips on the new pad before installation.

    Install replacement dashboard pad
    With assistance, carefully position the new dashboard pad assembly into the vehicle through the passenger door opening. Align the pad with the cowl structure, steering column opening, and side mounting points. Ensure all electrical connector pass-throughs are properly aligned and not pinched. Seat the pad fully against all mounting surfaces before installing any fasteners.

    Install and torque all dashboard mounting fasteners
    Install all dashboard pad mounting screws in the reverse order of removal. Start with center mounting points to stabilize the pad, then install upper windshield edge fasteners, followed by side mounting fasteners. Torque all dashboard pad mounting screws to the manufacturer-specified value (verify in service manual; typically low torque for trim/pad fasteners into plastic bosses, on the order of 2-4 Nm) using a systematic pattern to ensure even seating. Verify pad sits flush at all edges with no gaps.

    Reconnect all electrical connections
    Reconnect all electrical connectors to their original locations, using the reference photos and labels created during disassembly. Ensure positive engagement of all connector locks. Pay special attention to airbag connectors (yellow) - these must click fully into place. Verify no connectors are left disconnected and no wires are pinched.

    Reinstall all trim panels and bezels
    Reinstall components in reverse order of removal: defroster grilles (torque screws to specification), center console radio bezel, instrument cluster bezel (torque screws to specification), glove box if removed, and A-pillar trim panels. Ensure all clips are fully seated and all visible gaps are even and consistent. Verify all trim pieces are secure with no rattles.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect battery negative terminal after all work is complete
2. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start) and verify all instrument cluster warning lights illuminate and then extinguish normally
3. Verify all dashboard-mounted switches, controls, and buttons operate correctly
4. Check for proper airbag system operation - SRS light should illuminate briefly at key-on then extinguish (if light remains on, diagnosis required)
5. Test all HVAC functions including mode selection, temperature control, and fan speeds
6. Verify no squeaks, rattles, or loose trim pieces during test drive

Verification

• All dashboard trim panels and bezels are properly seated with consistent gaps
• No warning lights remain illuminated on instrument cluster after startup
• All electrical functions controlled from dashboard operate correctly (lights, wipers, climate control)
• Dashboard pad is firmly mounted with no movement or flexing when pressed
• All defroster vents direct airflow properly
• SRS airbag warning light functions normally (brief illumination at key-on, then off)
