Door Handle - Interior

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the interior door handle assembly on a 2005 Dodge Viper, including trim panel removal and handle mechanism access.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Open the door to be serviced and ensure it remains open throughout the procedure
3. Inspect the interior door handle for the specific failure mode (broken lever, loose mechanism, etc.) to confirm replacement is necessary

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove Door Pull Cup Screw
   Locate the Torx screw in the bottom of the door pull cup (the recessed handle area used to close the door). Remove the single T25 Torx screw securing the pull cup trim piece. Carefully pull the pull cup trim forward and away from the door panel to release it.

   Remove Door Panel Fasteners
   Remove the 3 visible Torx screws securing the door panel to the door frame. These are typically located along the bottom edge and rear edge of the panel. Use a T20 or T25 Torx driver as appropriate for each fastener location.

   Release Door Panel Clips
   Starting at the bottom rear corner of the door panel, insert a trim panel removal tool between the panel and door frame. Gently pry outward to release the retaining clips. Work your way around the perimeter of the panel, releasing each clip. There are approximately 6-8 clips around the panel perimeter. Avoid prying near the window switch area to prevent damage.

   Disconnect Window Switch (if equipped)
   With the panel loose, lift the door panel upward slightly to disengage it from the window sill channel. If equipped with power windows, locate the switch connector on the back of the panel, press the release tab, and disconnect the electrical connector. If equipped with manual crank windows, ensure the window crank handle has been removed prior to panel removal. Set the door panel aside in a safe location. Note: Disconnect Window Switch (if equipped with power windows)

   Remove Interior Handle Mounting Screws
   Locate the interior door handle assembly mounted to the door frame. Remove the 2 Torx screws securing the handle mechanism to the door structure. These screws are typically T20 or T25. Note the orientation of the handle assembly for reinstallation.

   Disconnect Door Latch Cable
   Identify the door latch cable connected to the back of the interior handle assembly. Rotate the cable end fitting to disengage it from the handle lever, then slide the cable housing out of its retaining clip on the handle body. Note the cable routing for reinstallation.

   Remove Handle Assembly
   With the cable disconnected and mounting screws removed, carefully pull the interior handle assembly away from the door frame. Maneuver it through the access area in the door structure to remove it completely from the vehicle.

   Install New Handle Assembly
   Position the new interior handle assembly into the door frame, routing it through the access area. Align the mounting holes with the door structure. Reconnect the door latch cable by inserting the cable housing into the retaining clip on the handle body, then rotating the cable end fitting onto the handle lever until it clicks into place.

   Secure Handle Assembly
   Install the 2 mounting screws and torque to specification. Verify the handle operates smoothly and the door latch engages and releases properly before reinstalling the door panel.

   Handle Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)

    Reinstall Door Panel
    Reconnect the power window switch electrical connector. Position the door panel near the door frame and align it with the window sill channel at the top. Press the panel firmly onto the door frame, working around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips until each clicks into place. Verify all clips are fully seated.

    Install Door Panel Fasteners
    Install the Torx screws along the door panel edges and torque to specification. Reinstall the door pull cup trim piece and secure it with its T25 Torx screw, torqued to specification.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly is covered in steps 8-11, following the reverse order of disassembly
2. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated with audible clicks
3. Verify all door panel clips are engaged before installing screws to prevent panel misalignment

Verification

• Operate the interior door handle through its full range of motion to confirm smooth operation and proper latch release
• Open and close the door from both interior and exterior handles to verify proper latch function
• Check that the door panel is flush with surrounding body panels and all clips are secure
• Test the power window switch (if equipped) to confirm proper electrical connection
• Inspect for any rattles or loose components by gently pressing on various areas of the door panel
