Headlight Bulb - Single

Replace a single headlight bulb on the 2005 Dodge Viper by accessing the bulb assembly from behind the headlight housing in the engine bay.

Preparation

1. Ensure engine is cool to the touch
2. Open hood and secure with prop rod
3. Identify which headlight bulb requires replacement (driver or passenger side)

Procedure

1. 1

   Access bulb housing from engine bay
   Locate the back of the headlight assembly from inside the engine bay. On the driver side, access is relatively open. On the passenger side, you may need to reach around the air intake components. The bulb housing is accessed at the rear of the headlight assembly; verify the exact cap/retainer design against factory documentation for this vehicle.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Grasp the electrical connector at the back of the bulb housing and pull straight back to disconnect. The connector may use a friction lock or a locking tab - inspect for a release tab before pulling. If a tab is present, depress it to release; if none, wiggle gently to disconnect. Wiggle gently if resistance is felt to avoid damaging the connector pins.

   Remove bulb retaining ring
   Rotate the bulb retaining ring counterclockwise approximately one-quarter turn until it releases from the locked position. The ring uses a bayonet-style lock with tabs. Pull the ring away from the housing once unlocked.

   Extract old bulb
   Carefully pull the bulb straight out of the reflector housing. The bulb has a locating tab at the base that aligns with a slot in the socket - note its orientation for installation of the new bulb. Avoid touching the reflector surface inside the housing.

   Prepare new bulb
   Remove the new H9 bulb from its packaging using a clean cloth or while wearing clean gloves. Do not touch the glass portion of the bulb. Verify the bulb base orientation tab is visible and undamaged.

   Install new bulb
   Align the locating tab on the bulb base with the slot in the socket. Insert the bulb straight into the reflector housing until it seats fully against the back of the housing. The bulb should sit flush without gaps.

   Secure bulb retaining ring
   Place the retaining ring over the bulb base, aligning the tabs with the slots in the housing. Press the ring against the housing and rotate clockwise approximately one-quarter turn until it locks into place. Verify the ring is fully seated and secure. Note: torqueRefs": []

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector firmly onto the back of the bulb base until it seats completely. You should feel a positive click or snap when fully connected. Tug gently to verify the connection is secure.

Reassembly

1. No disassembly was required beyond bulb removal, so no additional reassembly steps are needed

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to start)
• Activate the headlights and verify the new bulb illuminates properly
• Check both low beam and high beam functions operate correctly
• Turn off headlights and ignition
• Visually inspect that the electrical connector is fully seated and the retaining ring is locked in position
• Close hood securely
