HVAC Control Panel

This procedure covers removal and installation of the HVAC control panel (climate control head unit) on the 2005 Dodge Viper, including dashboard trim removal and electrical connector disconnection.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 2 minutes
3. Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been in sun (to reduce risk of trim cracking)
4. Gather all tools and new control panel if replacing

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center console trim bezel
   Starting at the bottom edge of the center console trim bezel (the panel surrounding the HVAC controls and radio), carefully insert trim removal tools between the bezel and dash structure. The bezel is retained by snap clips around its perimeter. Work around the edge releasing clips, supporting the bezel as you go. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel straight back away from the dash approximately 2 inches but do not remove completely yet.

   Disconnect accessory power outlet
   With the bezel pulled forward, check behind it for any electrical connectors (such as hazard switch or accessory outlet, if routed through the bezel). Press the locking tab on any connector present and disconnect it. The bezel can now be completely removed and set aside in a safe location.

   Remove HVAC control panel mounting fasteners
   Locate the mounting screws securing the HVAC control panel to the dash structure. The control panel is retained by mounting screws around the perimeter of the opening (verify exact count and type against the factory service manual for the 2005 Viper). Remove all mounting screws and keep them organized for reinstallation.

   Pull control panel forward
   Grasp the HVAC control panel firmly and pull it straight out from the dash approximately 4-6 inches until you can access the rear of the unit. Support the panel while accessing the connectors. Do not allow the panel to hang by its wiring harnesses.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the two main electrical connectors on the back of the HVAC control panel. Press the locking tabs on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Note the orientation and position of each connector for reinstallation. The 2005 Viper uses electric mode/blend actuators controlled electronically, so no vacuum harness is present on the control panel.

   Disconnect control cables (if equipped)
   The 2005 Viper uses fully electronic climate controls, so there are no mechanical temperature or mode control cables attached to the control panel. No cable disconnection is required; proceed to the next step.

   Remove HVAC control panel
   With all connectors and cables disconnected, remove the HVAC control panel from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting area and connectors for any damage or debris before installing the replacement unit.

   Install new HVAC control panel
   Position the new or serviced HVAC control panel near the dash opening. If equipped with control cables, connect the temperature cable to the lever and secure the retaining clip. Connect the vacuum harness (if equipped) by pushing it firmly onto the rear port until it clicks. Connect both electrical connectors, ensuring the locking tabs engage fully. Verify all connections are secure.

   Secure control panel
   Push the HVAC control panel into the dash opening, aligning the mounting screw holes. Install all mounting screws and tighten evenly in a cross pattern to avoid warping the panel mounting ears. Do not overtighten the screws as the mounting ears can crack.

    Reinstall center console trim bezel
    If equipped with 12V power outlet, connect the electrical connector to the back of the bezel. Position the bezel over the control panel and radio, aligning all edges. Starting at one corner, press firmly around the perimeter of the bezel until all retaining clips snap into place. Verify the bezel is flush and secure all around.

    Reconnect battery and test system
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to be running initially). Test all HVAC control panel functions available on this vehicle: fan speed control, temperature adjustment, and the mode selections present on the Viper control head (verify available modes and recirculation function against the actual unit). Start the engine and verify the A/C compressor engages when A/C is selected and that all air delivery modes work correctly.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly follows removal in reverse order
2. Ensure all electrical connectors click fully into place with locking tabs engaged
3. Verify trim bezel clips are fully seated before considering the job complete
4. Do not overtighten control panel mounting screws to avoid cracking mounting ears

Verification

• All HVAC fan speeds operate correctly (typically 4 speeds plus off)
• Temperature control adjusts from full cold to full hot smoothly
• All mode selections work: defrost, panel, floor, bi-level, and mix modes
• A/C compressor engages when A/C button is pressed (listen for click and engine load change)
• Recirculation door operates when button is pressed
• Control panel illumination works when headlights are turned on
• No warning lights or error messages on instrument cluster
• All trim panels are secure with no rattles or gaps
