Radio/Head Unit

Remove and replace the factory radio/head unit in a 2005 Dodge Viper, including center console trim removal and antenna/wiring harness disconnection.

Preparation

2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge

Procedure

   Remove Climate Control/Radio Bezel
   Using a plastic trim tool, carefully pry the climate control and radio bezel from the center console starting at the bottom edge. Work around the perimeter, releasing the retaining clips. The bezel surrounds both the climate controls and the radio opening. Pull the bezel forward once all clips are released and set aside in a safe location to avoid scratching.

   Remove Radio Mounting Fasteners
   Locate the 4 Torx screws securing the radio to the mounting bracket (2 on each side of the radio chassis). Remove these screws using a T20 Torx driver. Keep the screws organized for reinstallation.

   Pull Radio Forward
   Carefully slide the radio unit forward out of the dash opening approximately 4-6 inches to access the rear connectors. Support the radio weight with one hand to prevent strain on the wiring harnesses.

   Disconnect Antenna Cable
   Locate the antenna cable connector on the rear of the radio (typically a Motorola-style push-on connector). Firmly grasp the connector body (not the cable) and pull straight back to disconnect. Do not twist or bend the cable excessively.

   Disconnect Wiring Harnesses
   Identify the main power/speaker harness connector(s) on the rear of the radio. Press the release tab(s) on each connector while pulling straight back to disconnect. Identify the factory harness connector(s) on the rear of the radio (verify the exact number of connectors for your specific unit). Remove the radio from the vehicle.

   Prepare Replacement Radio
   If installing an aftermarket radio, connect the wiring harness adapter to the vehicle's factory connectors. Match connector shapes and ensure full engagement with an audible click. Connect the antenna adapter cable if the new radio requires a different connector style than the factory Motorola plug. Route the adapter harness to the new radio location.

   Connect New Radio
   Connect the wiring harness(es) to the rear of the new radio, ensuring all connectors are fully seated and locked. Connect the antenna cable by pressing firmly until it clicks or seats fully. Verify all connections are secure before proceeding.

   Test Radio Function
   Reconnect the negative battery terminal temporarily. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position (do not start engine). Power on the radio and verify it illuminates, receives AM/FM stations clearly, and all speakers produce sound. Test all radio functions including volume, seek, and preset buttons. If functioning correctly, turn off ignition and disconnect battery again.

   Install Radio into Dash
   With battery disconnected again, carefully slide the new radio into the dash opening while ensuring wiring harnesses route properly behind the unit without pinching. Align the radio mounting holes with the bracket. Install the 4 T20 Torx screws and tighten evenly to secure the radio. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the radio chassis.

    Reinstall Center Bezel
    Position the climate control/radio bezel over the dash opening, ensuring the top edge aligns first. Press firmly around the entire perimeter to engage all retaining clips until each clicks into place. Verify the bezel sits flush with no gaps.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal after all trim pieces are secured
2. Verify all trim panels are flush and properly clipped with no rattles
3. Reprogram radio presets and clock settings as needed

Verification

• Start the vehicle and verify the radio powers on with ignition in ACC or ON position
• Test all radio functions: AM/FM reception, volume control, all speaker output (front left, front right if equipped)
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster related to electrical systems
• Check that the center console bezel is secure with no rattles or loose clips
• Confirm antenna reception is strong with no static or interference
