Shifter Boot

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the shifter boot on a 2005 Dodge Viper with manual transmission, including bezel and retainer removal.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Allow vehicle interior to cool if recently driven, as center console area retains heat
3. Place transmission in neutral for easier access to shifter components

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center console trim bezel
   Locate the shifter boot bezel surrounding the shifter lever. This trim piece sits on top of the center console tunnel. Carefully pry up the bezel starting from the rear edge using a trim panel removal tool. Work around the perimeter to release the clips securing it to the console. Lift the bezel up and over the shifter knob. Note the number and location of the retaining clips as you release them (count varies; verify against the factory service manual). Note: Press down firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips.

   Remove shifter knob if necessary
   If the shifter knob prevents bezel removal, unscrew the knob counterclockwise by hand. The Viper shifter knob may be threaded or retained by a set screw; inspect the base of the knob before removal and consult the factory service manual for the correct retention method. Some model years may have a set screw at the base; check for this before forcing removal. Once loose, lift the knob straight up and off the shifter.

   Access boot retainer
   With the bezel removed, you will see the shifter boot secured by a plastic or metal retainer ring. This ring sits in a groove in the console opening and holds the boot lip in place. Note the orientation of the boot before removal for proper reinstallation.

   Remove boot retainer ring
   The boot retainer ring may be held by clips or fasteners. Carefully pry the ring up from its groove using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver. Work around the entire circumference to release all clips. If fasteners are present, remove them using the appropriate size socket (verify fastener size against the factory service manual). Lift the retainer ring away from the console opening.
   ⚠Do not force the retainer ring; excessive force can crack the plastic console structure.

   Remove old shifter boot
   Pull the boot upward and over the shifter lever. The boot typically has an upper retention method where it grips the shifter lever. Slide the boot up the lever to the top, then lift it completely off. Inspect the lever for any debris or adhesive residue from the old boot.

   Clean mounting surfaces
   Clean the console opening and retainer ring groove with a clean cloth. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive that may prevent proper seating of the new boot. Inspect the retainer ring for cracks or damage; replace if necessary.

   Install new shifter boot
   Slide the new boot over the top of the shifter lever with the correct orientation (seam typically faces rearward). Pull the boot down the lever until the lower lip reaches the console opening. Ensure the boot is not twisted and sits evenly around the lever.

   Install boot retainer ring
   Position the boot lip into the console opening groove. Place the retainer ring over the boot lip, aligning it with the groove. Press the ring down firmly around the entire circumference until all clips engage. If fasteners were removed, reinstall them and tighten to secure the ring. Ensure the boot material is not pinched or folded under the retainer.

   Reinstall shifter knob
   If the shifter knob was removed, reinstall it using the original retention method (thread on clockwise by hand if threaded, or seat and secure the set screw if so equipped). Tighten until snug, ensuring the knob is properly seated and oriented. If a set screw is present, tighten it to secure the knob position.

    Reinstall center console bezel
    Position the bezel over the shifter knob and align it with the console opening. Press down firmly around the perimeter to engage all 4 clips. Verify the bezel sits flush with the console surface and does not have gaps.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim clips are fully engaged and the bezel is secure
2. Check that the boot does not interfere with shifter movement through all gears
3. Ensure no tools or parts were left in the console area

Verification

• Cycle the shifter through all gear positions to verify full range of motion without binding or interference from the new boot
• Check that the boot remains properly seated in the retainer ring during shifter operation
• Verify the center console bezel is secure and does not rattle or move when touched
• Inspect the boot visually to ensure it is not twisted or improperly oriented
