Washer Pump

This procedure removes and replaces the windshield washer pump on a 2005 Dodge Viper, requiring access to the washer fluid reservoir in the front compartment.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake.
2. Allow engine to cool if recently driven.
3. Place drain pan or bucket under work area to catch washer fluid.
4. Have shop towels ready for fluid cleanup.

Procedure

   Access Washer Reservoir
   Open the hood and locate the windshield washer fluid reservoir in the front compartment. Consult the vehicle service manual to confirm the exact reservoir location before proceeding, then identify the electrical connector and fluid hoses attached to the pump. Note the reservoir position and identify the electrical connector and fluid hoses attached to the pump at the bottom of the reservoir.

   Disconnect Electrical Connector
   Locate the electrical connector on the washer pump at the base of the reservoir. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight off the pump. If the connector is tight, gently wiggle it while pulling to avoid damaging the terminals.

   Disconnect Washer Hoses
   Identify the outlet hose(s) connected to the washer pump. Gently pull the hose(s) straight off the pump outlet nipple(s). If the hose is stuck, carefully use a flathead screwdriver to pry between the hose and pump body while pulling. Position drain pan directly under the pump as fluid will begin draining immediately.

   Remove Washer Pump from Reservoir
   The washer pump is press-fit into a grommet in the bottom of the reservoir. Grasp the pump body firmly and pull it straight out of the grommet with steady, even force to release it. If the pump resists, gently rock it side to side while pulling to work it free from the grommet. Washer fluid will drain from the reservoir opening - keep drain pan positioned to catch fluid.

   Inspect Grommet and Reservoir
   Inspect the rubber grommet in the reservoir opening for cracks, tears, or deterioration. If damaged, remove the old grommet by pulling it out of the reservoir. Clean the reservoir opening of any debris or contamination. If the grommet is in good condition, leave it in place for reuse.

   Install New Washer Pump
   If replacing the grommet, press the new grommet firmly into the reservoir opening until it seats completely. Lubricate the new pump's seal with a small amount of washer fluid. Insert the new pump into the grommet with the electrical connector oriented in the same direction as the original. Push the pump straight into the grommet until it is fully seated. The pump should be held securely in place by the grommet's friction fit.

   Reconnect Washer Hoses
   Push the washer hose(s) firmly onto the pump outlet nipple(s) until they are fully seated. Ensure the hose(s) are pushed on far enough to prevent leaks - typically 1/2 inch onto the nipple. Tug gently on each hose to verify secure connection.

   Reconnect Electrical Connector
   Align the electrical connector with the pump terminals and push it straight onto the pump until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.

   Refill Washer Fluid
   Fill the washer fluid reservoir with fresh windshield washer fluid to the full mark. Fill until the fluid reaches the maximum fill line, using the reservoir's marked capacity as your guide. Avoid overfilling - stop at the maximum fill line on the reservoir.

    Test Washer System Operation
    Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to be running). Activate the windshield washer system and verify the pump operates smoothly and fluid sprays properly from all nozzles. Check for leaks at the pump body, grommet seal, hose connections, and electrical connector. If leaks are present at hose connections, remove and reseat the hoses. Run the washer for 10-15 seconds to prime the system and purge any air from the lines.

Reassembly

1. Reassembly is integrated into the installation steps above.
2. Ensure all hose connections are secure and leak-free before closing the hood.
3. Dispose of drained washer fluid according to local regulations.

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position and activate windshield washer system.
• Verify pump operates without unusual noise or vibration.
• Confirm washer fluid sprays properly from all windshield nozzles with good coverage.
• Check for leaks at pump body, grommet seal, and all hose connections.
• Verify electrical connector is fully seated and locked.
• Confirm washer fluid reservoir is filled to proper level and cap is secure.
