Wiper Switch

Remove and replace the wiper switch (turn signal/multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2005 Dodge Viper.

• Wiper/multifunction switch assembly × 1 — Mopar 56044672AD or equivalent

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect battery negative terminal
4. Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
5. Position steering wheel in straight-ahead position

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove Lower Steering Column Cover
   Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the fasteners securing the lower cover (typically 2-3 screws accessible from below). Gently pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside.

   Remove Upper Steering Column Cover
   With the lower cover removed, locate the fasteners securing the upper column cover (typically 2 screws near the base of the cover). Remove these fasteners and carefully lift the upper cover up and away from the steering column. Note any alignment tabs or clips that engage with the lower cover area.

   Access Wiper Switch Mounting
   With both column covers removed, the wiper/multifunction switch is now visible mounted to the steering column. Verify the stalk side (wiper function may be on the right stalk on this platform). Identify the electrical connector(s) attached to the rear of the switch assembly and the mounting fasteners securing it to the column.

   Disconnect Wiper Switch Electrical Connector
   Locate the electrical connector at the rear of the wiper switch. Press the release tab on the connector and carefully pull it straight away from the switch. If there are multiple connectors, disconnect all of them, noting their positions for reinstallation.

   Remove Wiper Switch Mounting Fasteners
   Remove the fastener(s) securing the wiper switch assembly to the steering column (verify exact count and type against service documentation). These are typically located on the left side of the column bracket. Keep these fasteners as they will be reused with the new switch.

   Remove Wiper Switch Assembly
   With the fasteners removed, carefully slide the wiper switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch lever should pull straight out from the column. Inspect the mounting bracket and column for any wear or damage.

   Install New Wiper Switch
   Position the new wiper switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning the mounting holes with the column bracket. Ensure the switch lever is properly oriented to match the original stalk position when seated in the straight-ahead position. Slide the switch fully into position until it seats against the column.

   Install Wiper Switch Mounting Fasteners
   Install the 2 mounting fasteners and tighten securely by hand, then snug with the appropriate tool. Do not overtighten plastic-threaded fasteners. Verify the switch has no lateral movement when fasteners are tight.

   Reconnect Electrical Connector
   Connect the electrical connector(s) to the rear of the wiper switch assembly. Push firmly until the connector locks with an audible click. Verify the connector lock tab is fully engaged. Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is secure.

    Reinstall Upper Column Cover
    Position the upper steering column cover over the column, aligning any tabs or clips. Install the mounting fasteners and tighten securely. Ensure the cover sits flush and does not interfere with the wiper switch lever movement.

    Reinstall Lower Column Cover
    Position the lower steering column cover beneath the column, engaging any alignment tabs with the upper cover. Install all mounting fasteners and tighten securely. Verify both covers fit properly with no gaps or misalignment.

    Reconnect Battery
    Reconnect the battery negative terminal and tighten to specification.
    Torque spec

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

1. All column covers must be properly aligned and seated before fastener installation
2. Ensure wiper switch lever has full range of motion without binding against column covers
3. Verify all electrical connectors are fully locked before reassembly completion

Verification

• Turn ignition to RUN position (do not start engine)
• Test wiper switch through all positions: intermittent (multiple speeds if equipped), low, high, and mist
• Verify washer function operates correctly when wiper lever is pulled
• Test turn signal function in both left and right directions
• Confirm hazard light function operates correctly
• Verify high beam flash and headlight dimmer functions work properly
• Check that wiper switch lever returns to center position after turn signal use
• Inspect column covers for proper fit and no interference with switch operation
