The 2020 Ford Edge sits on the CD4 platform with two turbocharged engine choices. The 2.0L EcoBoost is relatively trouble-free, but the 2.7L EcoBoost has significant internal engine failure issues that overshadow most other concerns on this platform.
2.7L EcoBoost Catastrophic Engine Failure
Occasional · high severity
Typical onset: 40,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: sudden loss of power under load, metallic knocking from engine bay, white smoke from exhaust, oil consumption between changes, check engine light with misfire codes
Fix: Carbon buildup on intake valves causes pre-ignition and detonation, leading to cracked pistons, destroyed rings, and spun bearings. Requires complete engine rebuild or replacement. 18-24 labor hours for short block swap, more for full rebuild. Ford extended warranty to 7yr/70k on some VINs but many fall outside coverage.
Estimated cost: $8,000-15,000
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 60,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: transmission fluid spots under vehicle, burning smell from engine bay, low fluid warning on dash, sluggish shifting when hot
Fix: The quick-connect fittings on cooler lines crack or the crimped connections fail. Lines run along frame rail and leak onto exhaust. Replace both feed and return lines as a set, flush cooler. 2.5-3.5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $400-700
PTU (Power Transfer Unit) Fluid Neglect Issues
Common · medium severity
Typical onset: 80,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: whining or grinding from front center of vehicle, vibration during acceleration, binding sensation in tight turns, metal shavings in PTU fluid
Fix: Ford calls PTU fluid 'lifetime' but it breaks down by 60k. Neglect leads to bearing and gear failure. PTU fluid change is 0.8 hours and cheap insurance. Full PTU replacement is 4-5 hours labor if it grenades.
Estimated cost: $80-150 preventive service, $1,200-1,800 for PTU replacement
Driveshaft Center Support Bearing Failure
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-110,000 mi
Symptoms: clunking on acceleration or deceleration, vibration at highway speeds, rumbling from underneath vehicle, worse when cold
Fix: The rubber isolator in the center carrier bearing deteriorates, letting the driveshaft whip around. Became recall-worthy on some VINs. Replace entire driveshaft assembly as Ford doesn't sell bearing separately. 2-2.5 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $600-900
Rear Camera Failure and Wiring Corrosion
Common · low severity
Symptoms: intermittent black screen in reverse, pixelated or frozen image, 'camera unavailable' message, issues worse in cold or wet weather
Fix: Water intrusion at liftgate corrodes camera connector pins. Sometimes just the camera, sometimes harness repair needed. TSB 20-2217 covers repair procedure. Recall 20S39 addressed some units. 1-1.5 hours labor for camera, more if harness is damaged.
Estimated cost: $200-450
Transmission Shudder on 8F35 (All Engines)
Occasional · low severity
Typical onset: 40,000-80,000 mi
Symptoms: vibration during light acceleration 30-50 mph, feels like driving over rumble strips, worse when transmission is warm, no warning lights
Fix: Torque converter lockup clutch material deteriorates or fluid breaks down. TSB 21-2302 recommends Mercon ULV fluid replacement and software update first. If that doesn't fix it, torque converter replacement is 8-10 hours labor.
Estimated cost: $300-500 for fluid/software, $2,000-2,800 for converter
2.0L EcoBoost Coolant Intrusion into Cylinders
Rare · high severity
Typical onset: 50,000-90,000 mi
Symptoms: white smoke on cold start, loss of coolant with no visible leaks, rough idle when cold, milky residue on oil cap, misfire codes
Fix: Open-deck block design allows head gasket failure between coolant passages and cylinders. Not as common as the 2.7L issues but catastrophic when it happens. Head gasket replacement both sides is 12-15 hours labor, but often find warped heads requiring machine work.
Estimated cost: $3,500-5,500
Owner tips
If buying a 2.7L EcoBoost, verify engine replacement history or budget for it — this is THE problem with these
Change PTU fluid every 30k regardless of what the manual says — $100 service prevents $1,500 repair
Use only Motorcraft Mercon ULV in the 8F35 transmission, other fluids cause shudder issues
Check for TSB updates on the transmission — Ford has released multiple calibration fixes
Inspect transmission cooler lines and PTU for leaks at every oil change, catch them early
Buy the 2.0L EcoBoost without hesitation; avoid the 2.7L V6 unless it already has a replaced engine with good documentation and you're getting a steep discount.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.
Consequence: A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Edge, 2020 Lincoln Nautilus and Ford Escape and 2021 Lincoln Corsair and Ford Bronco Sport vehicles. An inadequate amount of lubricant in the rear drive unit may cause seizure of the rear drive axle.
Consequence: If the rear drive unit seizes, there may be a loss of drive and/or a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the rear drive unit lubricant level. Axles found to have lubricant at the minimum level will be filled to the full level. Axles found to be below the minimum lubricant fill level will be replaced, free of charge. This recall began March 12, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S02.
