Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust on cold start, Coolant loss with no visible leaks, Rough idle or misfires that progressively worsen, Milky oil on dipstick (advanced stage), Check engine light with misfire codes

Fix: Cylinder head cracking allows coolant into combustion chambers, washing cylinder walls and destroying bearings. Once advanced, requires complete engine replacement or short block with both heads. 18-24 labor hours for short block swap, more if main/rod bearings are damaged. Ford extended warranty coverage to 10yr/150k mi under 21B10, but many 2022s fall outside the build date range.

Fix: Ford spec'd lifetime fluid in the PTU but it breaks down rapidly, especially with AWD use. Once internals score, the unit grenades. Requires PTU replacement. 4-6 labor hours. Preventive fluid changes every 30k mi can prevent this, but damage is often done before owners know to do it.

Symptoms: Transmission fluid puddle under vehicle (red or brown), Low transmission fluid warning, Harsh shifting or slipping when fluid gets low, Fluid visible along cooler lines near radiator

Fix: Rubber hoses on the cooler lines crack and weep at the crimp connections. If caught early, just replace the lines. If run low, the 8F35 transmission can suffer valve body or clutch damage. 2-3 labor hours for lines only, add fluid flush. Monitor fluid level religiously if you see any seepage.

Fix: Multiple NHTSA recalls address this (21V-720, 22V-600, 23V-063). Requires SYNC module software reflash at dealer. 0.5-1.0 labor hour. Annoying but not a safety-critical failure if you use mirrors. Some units need APIM module replacement if corrupted.

Fix: Wastegate actuator rods wear or seize in the turbos. Can sometimes be freed with penetrating oil and exercise, but typically needs turbo replacement. 6-8 labor hours per turbo (this engine has two). Not as catastrophic as the 2.0L issues but expensive when it fails.
