Technician notes
- Two identical bushings per kingpin (upper + lower), pressed into the spindle. New bushings typically require reaming to final fit — commonly sublet to a machine shop.
- The lock pin is a special FLUTED bolt through the axle eye — its flutes engage the notch mid-shaft on the kingpin. Clock the notch to the bolt, then tighten by the NUT on the opposite side, not the bolt head.
- Threaded caps close the kingpin bores top and bottom, and the grease fittings mount in the caps — the pin greases through them. Caps come off first during teardown.
- At the I-beam connection: one lower bushing, then shim to bring vertical play into spec.
- The shims are sharp enough to cut you — wear gloves. Ask us how we know.
