Seat Heater Element

This procedure covers the installation or replacement of a seat heater element in a 1972 Ford F-100, requiring removal of the seat and partial disassembly of the seat upholstery.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
3. Allow seat to cool completely if vehicle has been running.
4. Remove any floor mats or obstructions around the seat.
5. Take photos of existing wiring connections for reference during reassembly.

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove seat mounting bolts
   Locate the four seat mounting bolts securing the seat to the floor. Two bolts are at the front of the seat tracks and two at the rear. Using a 1/2 inch socket, remove all four bolts. On some F-100 models, the bolts may be 7/16 inch instead. Keep track of any washers or spacers under the bolt heads.

   Disconnect existing electrical connections
   If replacing an existing heater element, trace the wiring harness from under the seat to its connection point. Disconnect any electrical connectors. If no previous heater was installed, skip to step 3. Note the routing of wires for reinstallation.

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Carefully lift the seat assembly out of the vehicle. The seat will be heavy, particularly if it is a bench seat. Use caution to avoid damaging door trim or dash components. Place the seat on a clean work surface with adequate lighting.

   Remove seat back upholstery (if applicable)
   If installing a heater element in the seat back, locate the hog rings securing the upholstery to the seat frame along the bottom edge of the seat back. Using hog ring pliers, compress and remove approximately 8 hog rings. Carefully peel back the upholstery to expose the foam padding underneath. Work slowly to avoid tearing the material.

   Remove seat bottom upholstery
   Flip the seat upside down to access the underside of the seat cushion. Locate the hog rings securing the upholstery to the seat frame around the perimeter. Remove approximately 12 hog rings using hog ring pliers. Carefully peel back the upholstery from the bottom and sides to expose the foam padding. Note the original position and routing of any existing springs or support wires.

   Test new heater element
   Before installation, use a multimeter to verify the heater element resistance. A typical automotive seat heater element should read between 2 and 6 ohms resistance. If the element reads infinite resistance (open circuit) or zero resistance (short circuit), do not install it.

   Position heater element on seat cushion
   Place the heater element pad on top of the foam cushion, centered on the seating area. The element should cover the primary seating surface but stay at least 2 inches away from all edges to prevent damage during upholstery reinstallation. Ensure the wire leads exit toward the rear or side of the seat where they can be routed to the power source.

   Secure heater element to foam
   Using heat-resistant spray adhesive or adhesive designed for upholstery work, secure the heater element to the foam padding. Apply adhesive according to manufacturer instructions, typically to both the foam and the back of the heater element. Press firmly and allow to set for the recommended time, usually 5-10 minutes. Ensure the element lies completely flat with no wrinkles or folds.

   Route heater element wiring
   Route the heater element wiring leads through the seat frame to exit at the bottom rear of the seat. Create a small notch or opening in the foam if necessary, ensuring no sharp edges contact the wiring. Use cable ties to secure the wiring to the seat frame, keeping it away from moving parts and sharp edges. Leave enough slack to prevent tension on connections during seat adjustment.

    Reinstall seat bottom upholstery
    Carefully pull the upholstery back over the foam padding and heater element, ensuring the material is properly aligned and centered. Working around the perimeter, reinstall hog rings approximately every 3-4 inches to secure the upholstery to the seat frame. Pull the material taut but not overly stretched. Ensure the heater element has not shifted during this process.

    Reinstall seat back upholstery (if applicable)
    If the seat back heater element was installed, pull the upholstery back into position and reinstall the hog rings along the bottom edge of the seat back. Ensure all material is properly seated and there are no visible wrinkles or bunching.

    Connect heater element to power source
    Connect the heater element wiring to the power supply. If using an aftermarket kit, connect the wiring harness according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically to a switched 12V power source through a relay and fused circuit. Use proper crimp connectors or solder and heat shrink tubing for all connections. Ensure positive and negative leads are correctly identified and connected. Do not connect directly to battery power without proper switching and fuse protection.

    Reinstall seat in vehicle
    Carefully lift the seat assembly and position it back onto the mounting points in the vehicle. Route the wiring harness to avoid pinch points and ensure it will not interfere with seat adjustment mechanisms. Align all four mounting holes with the floor mounting points.

    Install seat mounting bolts
    Install all four seat mounting bolts with any original washers or spacers. Hand-tighten first to ensure proper thread engagement, then tighten securely using a 1/2 inch socket (or 9/16 inch socket for the rear bolts if applicable). Verify the seat is solidly mounted with no movement or rocking.

    Final electrical connections and testing
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the heater switch to the ON position and verify operation. The seat should begin to warm within 2-3 minutes. Use your hand to check for even heat distribution across the seating surface. Verify no excessively hot spots are present. Check that the heater turns off when the switch is in the OFF position. If using a thermostat-controlled system, allow it to cycle to verify proper operation.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all hog rings are properly secured and upholstery is taut without excessive stretching.
2. Verify all electrical connections are properly insulated and secured away from moving parts.
3. Confirm seat mounting bolts are tight and seat does not rock or shift.
4. Test seat adjustment mechanisms to ensure heater wiring does not interfere with operation.

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to run) and activate seat heater switch.
• Verify heater begins warming within 2-3 minutes of activation.
• Check for even heat distribution across the entire heated surface with no cold spots.
• Verify heater deactivates when switch is turned off.
• Check that no warning lights or blown fuses have occurred.
• Operate seat adjustment mechanisms through full range to ensure wiring does not bind or interfere.
• Verify seat is solidly mounted with no movement or unusual noises.
