This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front power window motor on a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require module relearning procedures. Note radio code if applicable before proceeding.
The window regulator is under spring tension. Support the window glass before disconnecting the regulator to prevent glass from dropping.
ℹ️Work carefully around the vapor barrier to avoid tearing. Damaged barriers can cause water intrusion and wind noise.

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  3. Roll the affected window to the full-up position before beginning work
  4. Gather all tools and replacement parts before starting
  5. Take photos of door panel connections for reference during reassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove door panel
Remove the door handle trim bezel using a panel tool. Remove the T20 Torx screw behind the handle. Remove the armrest pull cup and remove two T30 Torx screws from the armrest area. Carefully pry the door panel away from the door starting at the bottom rear corner, releasing all retaining clips. Lift the panel up and away from the door window sill.
  2. 2
    Disconnect door panel electrical connections
Disconnect all electrical connectors from the door panel including power window switch, power lock switch, and any puddle lamp or speaker connectors. Press the locking tabs and pull connectors straight out. Set the door panel aside in a safe location where it will not be damaged.
  3. 3
    Remove vapor barrier access
Carefully peel back the vapor barrier film enough to access the window motor mounting area. The motor is located in the lower forward section of the door cavity. Use care not to tear the barrier; if adhesive needs to be reapplied later, clean the surfaces first.
  4. 4
    Secure window glass
Use masking tape to secure the window glass to the door frame in the full-up position. Apply tape from the top of the glass to the outer door frame. This prevents the glass from dropping when the regulator is disconnected from the motor.
  5. 5
    Disconnect window motor electrical connector
Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Move the wiring harness out of the work area.
  6. 6
    Remove window motor mounting bolts
Remove the three 10mm mounting bolts securing the window motor to the door inner panel. Support the motor as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Note the orientation of the motor for installation of the replacement.
  7. 7
    Separate motor from regulator
Carefully separate the window motor from the regulator mechanism. On most F-150 models, the motor connects to the regulator via a drive gear. Rotate the motor slightly while pulling to disengage the gear teeth. Remove the motor through the door access opening.
  8. 8
    Install new window motor
Position the new window motor at the regulator drive mechanism. Align the motor drive gear with the regulator gear teeth and rotate slightly to ensure full engagement. Verify the motor is properly seated before securing with bolts.
  9. 9
    Secure motor mounting bolts
Install the three mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then tighten bolts in a cross pattern. If the mounting bolts are 8mm head, use general tightening to secure. If 10mm or larger head bolts, refer to service specifications for proper torque.
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical and test operation
Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal. Reconnect the window switch connector to the door panel. Test window operation through full up and down cycles before final reassembly. Verify smooth operation and proper auto-up/auto-down function if equipped. Disconnect battery again before continuing.
  11. 11
    Restore vapor barrier
Press the vapor barrier film back into place, ensuring complete coverage and good adhesion around all edges. If adhesive has lost its bond, apply new vapor barrier adhesive to seal properly. Ensure no gaps exist that could allow water or air intrusion.
  12. 12
    Reinstall door panel
Reconnect all electrical connectors to the door panel. Position the panel over the door sill and press down to engage the top mounting. Press firmly around all edges to seat the retaining clips. Install the armrest T30 Torx screws, door handle T20 Torx screw, and replace any trim bezels.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all door panel clips are fully seated by checking for gaps around panel edges
  2. Reconnect negative battery terminal using proper torque specification
  3. Perform window initialization procedure: with ignition on, lower window fully and hold switch down for 2 seconds, then raise window fully and hold switch up for 2 seconds
  4. Test all door functions including locks, switches, and speakers to confirm proper reconnection

Verification

  • Operate window through complete up and down cycles multiple times to verify smooth operation
  • Test auto-up and auto-down features if equipped to ensure proper calibration
  • Check for any unusual noises during window operation
  • Verify window seals properly against weatherstripping when fully closed
  • Confirm all door panel switches and features function normally
  • Inspect door panel fitment for proper alignment and no gaps or rattles
