This procedure covers the replacement of the EVAP canister vent valve, located near the fuel tank on the frame rail, to restore proper evaporative emission system function.

- EVAP canister vent valve solenoid × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition OFF and remove key
- If needed for access, safely raise and support the rear of the vehicle with jack stands at the frame rails
- Allow exhaust system to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven
- Locate the EVAP canister vent valve on the driver side frame rail, forward of the fuel tank
Procedure
- 1Access the EVAP vent valvePosition yourself under the vehicle on the driver side near the fuel tank area. The EVAP canister vent valve is mounted on or near the charcoal canister assembly on the frame rail. Use a work light to clearly identify the valve and its electrical connector.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the EVAP vent valve. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight off the valve. If the connector is tight or corroded, gently wiggle while pulling to avoid breaking the locking tab.
- 3Disconnect vent hoseThe vent valve has a rubber hose connected to it that vents to atmosphere. Loosen the hose clamp using a flathead screwdriver or socket, then slide the clamp back along the hose. Carefully twist and pull the hose off the valve outlet.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect canister hoseLocate the hose connecting the vent valve to the charcoal canister. This may have a quick-disconnect fitting or a clamped connection. If clamped, loosen the clamp and remove the hose. If quick-disconnect, press the release tabs and pull the fitting apart.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 5Remove mounting hardwareThe EVAP vent valve is typically held by a mounting bracket with bolts or may be integrated into the canister assembly. Remove the mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. - 6Remove old vent valveOnce all fasteners and hoses are disconnected, remove the old EVAP vent valve from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting bracket and hoses for damage or deterioration. Check that hose ends are clean and free of debris.
- 7Install new vent valvePosition the new EVAP vent valve into the mounting bracket, ensuring proper orientation with the vent port facing downward (away from potential water intrusion). Verify the electrical connector is accessible and the hose ports are correctly aligned.
- 8Install mounting hardwareInstall the mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque them to specification in a cross pattern if multiple bolts are used.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect canister hoseConnect the hose from the charcoal canister to the appropriate port on the new vent valve. - 11Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the new vent valve until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked.
- 12Lower vehicle and clear codesIf vehicle was raised, carefully lower it to the ground and remove jack stands. Connect an OBD-II scan tool and clear any EVAP-related diagnostic trouble codes that were present. This allows for proper verification of the repair.
Reassembly
- Verify all hose connections are secure and hose clamps are properly tightened
- Ensure electrical connector is fully locked onto the vent valve
- Confirm no tools or parts were left under the vehicle
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine and listen for the EVAP vent valve to click briefly during self-test (may be very quiet)
- Start the engine and verify no unusual hissing sounds from the EVAP system area
- Drive vehicle through a complete drive cycle to allow the EVAP system to run self-tests
- After 50-100 miles of mixed driving, verify no EVAP-related trouble codes return using a scan tool
- Perform an EVAP system leak test using a scan tool if available to confirm system integrity
