This procedure replaces the fuel pump relay, which controls power to the fuel pump and is located in the engine compartment fuse/relay box.
Warnings
⚠️Fuel system operates under high pressure. Depressurize fuel system before performing any fuel system work to prevent fuel spray and fire hazard.
⚠️Disconnecting battery may cause airbag deployment if done improperly. Never disconnect battery with ignition on.
⚠A faulty fuel pump relay can cause no-start conditions. Verify relay failure before replacement by testing with multimeter or swapping with identical relay.
⚠Incorrect relay installation can damage fuel pump control module. Verify relay part number matches original before installation.
ℹ️Engine codes may need to be cleared after repair. Have scan tool available if check engine light is illuminated.
Tools required

Parts
- Fuel pump relay × 1 — Motorcraft EC-695 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate battery in engine compartment (driver side)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
- Wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Locate power distribution box on driver side of engine compartment near battery
- Identify fuel pump relay location using diagram on underside of fuse box cover
Procedure
- 1Access relay boxRemove the power distribution box cover by releasing the two side tabs and lifting upward. The cover diagram shows relay positions - fuel pump relay is typically position R3 or R10 depending on model year. Verify correct relay by checking part number on relay body or consulting diagram.
- 2Document relay orientationBefore removal, note the orientation of the relay terminal numbering and any markings. The relay has a specific orientation tab that must align with socket. Take a photo if needed for reference during installation.
- 3Remove old fuel pump relayUsing needle-nose pliers or relay puller, grip the relay body firmly and pull straight upward with steady pressure. The relay should release from the socket with moderate force. Do not rock side to side as this can damage socket terminals. Inspect socket terminals for corrosion, burning, or damage.
- 4Inspect relay socketExamine the relay socket terminals for signs of overheating (discoloration, melting), corrosion (green/white deposits), or bent pins. If socket shows damage, the entire power distribution box may require replacement. Clean minor corrosion with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry completely.⚠Damaged socket terminals can cause intermittent operation or relay failure. Do not proceed if socket is damaged - consult professional service.
- 5Test old relay (optional)Using a multimeter, verify the old relay has failed. Set multimeter to ohms. Test continuity between relay terminals 30 and 87 - should show open circuit (infinite resistance). Apply 12V across terminals 85 and 86 - relay should click and show continuity between terminals 30 and 87. If relay tests good, problem may be elsewhere in fuel system.
- 6Verify replacement relayCompare new relay to original. Verify part number matches, terminal configuration is identical, and amperage rating is correct (typically 20A or 30A for fuel pump relay). Ford EcoBoost systems are sensitive to incorrect relay specifications.⚠️Using incorrect relay amperage can cause fuel pump failure or electrical fire. Verify specifications match original relay exactly.
- 7Apply dielectric grease (optional)Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the relay terminals to prevent corrosion and ensure good electrical contact. Use sparingly - excess grease can attract dirt and cause connection issues.
- 8Install new relayAlign the relay orientation tab with the socket slot. Insert relay straight down into socket with firm, even pressure until fully seated. Relay should click into place and sit flush with surrounding relays. Do not force - if relay does not insert easily, verify correct orientation and part number.
- 9Reinstall relay box coverPosition relay box cover over relay box, ensuring all relays and fuses clear the cover. Press down firmly on both sides until side tabs click into locked position. Verify cover is fully seated and secure.
- 10Reconnect batteryReconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Ensure cable connection is clean and tight to prevent voltage drop issues that can affect fuel pump operation.
Reassembly
- Ensure relay box cover is fully latched and secure
- Verify battery terminal is tight and free of corrosion
- Close hood after verification testing is complete
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Listen for fuel pump priming sound (2-3 second hum from rear of vehicle). This confirms relay is energizing fuel pump.
- If fuel pump does not prime, turn ignition off, wait 10 seconds, and repeat. If still no prime, recheck relay installation and socket condition.
- Start engine and verify it starts normally and runs smoothly without hesitation or stumbling.
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes using scan tool. Clear any fuel system codes that were present before repair.
- Perform a test drive to verify normal acceleration and no fuel delivery issues under load.
- If problems persist after relay replacement, further diagnosis of fuel pump, wiring, or fuel pump control module may be required.
